FM Frequency of the Week: 98.7

Tyler, TX:

A good signal from Classic Hits KSPF Dallas-Fort Worth "98.7 The Spot" at my place. This will be an interesting frequency for the Tyler side of the market, as within the next year, "Alphabet Academy" has applied for an LPFM CP on this channel. The programming offered by them is going to go over like a lead balloon here.

Melbourne FL

Most often heard during enhanced conditions

WKGR Wellington FL 98.7 – The Palm Beaches Rock Station - Rock (about 120 miles south of Melbourne)

WYKZ - Beaufort SC -Savannah GA - 98.7 The River - 80s/90s 2023

Wilmington Delaware

Not a good frequency here due to strong signals on 98.5 and 98.9. However I can get WCZT in Villas NJ many evenings in humid weather and occasionally WMZQ in Washington DC.

Central Kentucky:
WKDO Liberty doing a classic country format.
Running 25 kw, it can be heard in most of the Lake Cumberland area.
I'm 45 miles away and I get a decent signal here

East Tennessee: Knoxville rimshot WOKI (Oliver Springs), News-Talk 98.7. Sometimes abovementioned WKDO, Liberty KY makes it underneath, and from Sevierville I logged WSMW, "Simon 98.7" Greensboro NC.
Several years ago during an E Skip opening to the Northeast I may have gotten WEPN New York, overcoming WOKI. but not confirmed. During that same opening I logged WBZ-FM Boston on 98.5.

Denver, CO - HD interference from local 98.5 KYGO.

In the Wilkes-Barre(Northeast PA) area, it's mostly HD splatter from adjacent 98.5 WKRZ. Because of that, it's impossible to receive anything on this frequency. However, at one time when its HD signal was off, I once received WLZW out of Utica, NY and during E-skip, KLUV from Dallas, TX came in, they play Classic Hits.

In Chicago, it's WFMT, the classical-music powerhouse. The signal is a 6 kW ERP, a grandfathered higher power, so it gets out deep into Illinois (well beyond the Radio Locator coverage map) and within 35 miles of Lafayette, Ind., even though there's a 98.7 there (WASK-FM).

A 1971 coverage map had WFMT's signal reaching as far as Davenport and Indianapolis, which was a best-case tall-tower scenario, though when the 98.7 in Springfield, Ill., signed on, the FCC got complaints from WFMT listeners in central Illinois.

Clifton, New Jersey

I get WEPN-FM "98.7 ESPN" New York, NY. It currently airs a Sports format with local talk shows, play-by-play, and some hours of ESPN Radio. The current format is expected to end on August 31, 2024.

Retro: For many years, it was known as 98.7 Kiss-FM with the call letters WRKS-FM. Beginning in 1981, it had an Urban Contemporary format. In Late 1994, Kiss-FM dropped the Hip Hop music to focus on R&B and Classic Soul. It flipped to a Sports format on April 30, 2012.

Older-timers know this facilty as 99X, WXLO and WOR-FM
