KBLA deal on again?

K.M. Richards

Program Director, The Eighties Channel™

FCC rejected the objection by the Ukrainian Congress Committee to block Multicultural Radio Broadcasting's license renewal application. Station now licensed to the end of 2029.

The Tavis Smiley deal to acquire 1580 had been put on hold at the FCC because of that objection and he has been operating the station under a LMA all this time. So apparently this starts the clock ticking again, with a slightly lower purchase price than four years ago ($6.89 million vs. $7.15 million).

Still overvalued sales price.

Perhaps Mr. Smiley is a victim of the old adage often attributed to P.T. Barnum (although it is more likely that a banker named David Hannum from Syracuse actually said it).

Or Mr. Smiley is so much the optimist that his dream will pan out that he doesn't care that he is overpaying.

The most interesting part of the linked article was this:

Smiley was reportedly putting up $1.5 million for the purchase and corralled investors including rapper Ice Cube, political commentator Van Jones, political comedian Bill Maher, NBA player Mike Conley and Faithful Central Bible Church in Inglewood pastor Kenneth Ulmer.

$7 million is nothing to that group. Ice Cube's clothing budget is more than $7 million. This is what fans of forgotten radio formats should be thinking about. Get a group together and buy a radio station. Run it as a non-profit. Do what EMF does.

The whole idea that anyone even using AM in LA who is not from Southeastern Asia would ever go above 1070 on the dial is very absurd.

But is the target group as likely to donate as the Christians who listen to EMF are?

Remember, even EMF had to modify its more contemporary Christian format (Air 1) because the younger listeners were both fewer and did not donate with the regularity and in the amounts that K-Love listeners do.

No but they're not buying AM stations. If you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with.

You can say a lot about Tavis, but he knows a lot of famous rich people. He has built a foundation around this station that is culturally marketable, in the same way iHeart is doing with BIN. There is a market for what Tavis does, even if it doesn't make money. That seems to be what he's aiming for.

It would be so much cheaper he he launched a YouTube channel
Yes, of course! What they are spending to buy a station at 1580 could go a long way towards creating such a channel and promoting it in social media

10 years ago 93/KHJ was sold for $9.25m. That's right....ten years ago, better dial position, and better coverage. Factor in the declining value of Ancient Modulation, and the price for KBLA doesn't make sense.

Hey Tavis...need a company car? We got a one of a kind Gremlin at a sahweet price! 😉

Not really a price reduction, more like the old rent-to-own scheme if he already paid more than that in LMA fees during that time.

Hadn't thought of that, but it would depend on whether or not Arthur Liu wrote the deal to have the LMA fees count toward the purchase. That's probably the case, but who knows?

And those Gremli (plural of Gremlin, right?) had hi-fi AM radios that went all the way up to 1580 so they could listen to KTUF with that 50 kw transmitter that sometimes they forgot to turn off at sunset.

Yep, here in San Diego, Phoenix's 1580 used to boom in here at night when they "forgot" to power down. It often overpowered Smiley's 1580 just up the coast.

I was living in Scottsdale at the time and attending ASU while doing consulting. And I was an AM DXer... who noted KTUF on often after sunset.

Once I called the request line and told the jock he had forgotten to turn off the AM at sunset. "Why do you care?" "Well, I like listening to the Sonora station at night and you are blocking it". "Oh, you are one of those..." Hung up, but the signal was gone in about 30 seconds!

If he gets millionaire celebrities to pay for it, what difference does it make?
How is he convincing his friends to help fund this? Sure, I could buy a radio station in my home market and be the next Colin Cowherd. But, I won’t. I definitely won’t after seeing how much electricity per month costs to help keep the lights on
