La Privada 97.9 HD2

SBS's KLAX seems to have launched an HD2 station called "La Privada".

It would be generous to say that this station "goes after" an audience as it's just an HD subchannel, but this seems to go for KBUA's audience, with an "alterado" type format, as contrasted with KLAX's more conservative, adult sound.

Has SBS done any HD only formats in its other markets? Curious, as we’re awaiting a new SBS operation here in Houston.
In New York, there's no HD only format specifically run by SBS.

I'm assuming that this is confirmation that every HD only format run by SBS will be on LaMusica form this point forward.

Not all HD Stations are online, most stations are exclusive to only HD Radio Device, Just like WLEY-HD2 being a simulcast of WSKQ-FM in New York

The difference between KLAX-HD2 being on LaMusica and WLEY-HD2 not being online is the fact that WLEY-HD2 is an outright simulcast of WSKQ-FM outside of legal IDs.

SBS Chairman + CEO Raul Alarcon mentions the La Privada format being rolled out by late '24/early '25 in Chicago, New York and other major cities:

From the above-linked article dated 10/14/2024:

“We’re launching a network over the air and digital, for that new fusion of regional Mexican with urban, because we’ve seen that the music is appealing,” Alarcón revealed. “And La Privada is not just a station, it’s a whole network. We’re still in preparations, but in the next 90 days, we’ll launch in Chicago, New York, and other major cities.”

For those "major cities": is he referring to HD2 channels or possibly full signals?
As mentioned upthread, Houston awaits SBS finalizing its deal,
while New York has 98.7 on the selling block (but only if SBS is interested in buying).
Unless there's about to be a change at one of their already established stations:

WSKQ-97.9 (highly unlikely)
WPAT-93.1 (maybe?)

Discussion on the NYC and Houston boards point to La Privada being on HD-2 signals.
As mentioned upthread, Houston awaits SBS finalizing its deal,
And there is speculation that a second Houston station (KFNC) might also be heading to a Regional Mexican variant.

Radio Ink reports this morning that Alarcón has announced that "La Privada" will indeed be a national format featuring "a fusion of regional Mexican and urban music":

And that further clarifies that this is not a format that will play both Regional Mexican and Reggaetón, but, rather, "progressive" Regional Mexican music with an urban flavor.

Not quite the same, but it is in the spirit on what was called alterado music. A little bit of an urban and gangsta lean.
Yes, you make a good point with your comparison with "alterado".

For a while, quite a few years back, we thought that alterado might be a separate format. But its appeal broadened to take in the wider "grupera" regional Mexican audience and it just blended in with the mainstream.

As a comment, I'd say that we have to watch how far the reggaetón influence can spread. Reggaetón is Afro-Antillean and Caribbean in origin. So is salsa. Salsa never became "big" in Mexico or in most of South America except Venezuela and Colombia... which have a distinct Caribbean influence.

Let's see how far reggaetón flavoring gets in genres like banda and norteña.

Is “Oye Mi Canto” by Daddy Yankee & N.O.R.E. considered alterado?

Hearing that La Privada just made it's way into Puerto Rico of all places via WZNT-HD2. The next format for the always changing 96.5 WRXD? 😆

All jokes aside, it's pretty odd that SBS planted a corridos tumbados HD2 in PR. A stark contrast to WZNT's Salsa/Talk programming. Would be a better fit for WODA's HD2, but no one listens to R/M in Puerto Rico anyways.

It's been a long time since El Gallito de Manatí would occasionally appear on TV variety shows or at Fiestas Patronales.
