100.7 KTYK-HD4, Overton (Tyler/Longview)

Apparently, KTYK has added an HD4 subchannel that plays AAA, simulcasting WXPN’s XPoNential Radio network. This supposedly started when Red River Radio closed their purchase of KSCL Shreveport (and flipped them to the XPoNential Radio network as well).

Red River Radio supposedly broadcasts this on all their HD4’s. However, I am unable to find any information about it besides Wikipedia. I am out of the broadcasting range of KTYK. Can anyone confirm this?

If true, I certainly find this a welcome addition to the East Texas radio dial!
 
Confirmed. KTYK HD-4 has been simulcasting WXPN since April. I'm not sure what KSCL is doing since Centenary sold it to LSU-S, but 100.7-4 is a direct simulcast of WXPN. There is no mention of 91.3, or the KSCL call, on KTYK.

What is being fed to KTYK is a direct simulcast of WXPN 88.5 Philadelphia, including a full identification at the TOH. I never mentioned "Xponential Radio" in my response, but after reading Jay's post again, he was mistaken on KTYK HD-4 simulcasting WXPN HD-2, and I didn't catch that. There is no Xponential Radio in Tyler-Longview, but WXPN's main AAA programming has been broadcast here on 100.7-4 since April.

There’s no mention of any Red River Radio stations on the XPoNential Radio website station list. But they also don’t mention Texas A&M Commerce’s KETR-HD2, which carries XPoNential Radio locally branded as “The Lion.” So the site may be out of date.

I don't know if it's changed since then but they added the HD4 to their stations roughly late June 2023 but was silent. I heard the alternate music on the air early last August.

The last time I checked with my HD radio over there was last year (it might have been before August, maybe July). That was when KTYK was the only station in the market in HD. I know there were HD2 and HD3 subchannels playing classical and public news/talk. I think there was a blank HD4, too. Now KYKX is in HD with KOOI supposed to be going into HD. I got a lot to catch up on over there!

I remember learning that they acquired KSCL and thought it’d be nice if they did
something like come up with an AAA format like KKXT and simulcast it on that HD4 channel. I’m not sure what they’re going to do with KSCL, but I imagine they would eventually simulcast on their HD subchannels.

I wouldn't get too excited. KYKX HD2's audio is not so hot, and a full half minute behind KKUS. KYKX itself, although still showing on the readout as "KYXK", sounds alright, if not just a wee bit compressed. KTYK hasn't changed a thing, since the addition of the WXPN programming, and Jack doesn't appear to be going digital. K291CH has been restored to service and back to relaying Kicks 105-7 again. I'm the one that mentioned 106.1 being combined with 106.5 previously, but that's not the case anymore, hell it may never have been a serious consideration. That's just what was mentioned to me in the moment of our discussion, because...well, let's just say this. I have a real soft spot for 106.5 at Jacksonville, because of its deep-rooted history in ETX, and mine with it. Right now, the biggest stick in the Piney Woods is on autopilot, and no effort is put into it, other than making sure the Lobo and Cowboy games are patched into it. I just hope little Susie's real happy about the current results of her previous actions.

KYKX went digital, solely, to feed The Ranch to K279CI. There was a demand for it to happen, so that Big D and Bubba were reliably available in both Tyler and Longview. Nothing more, nothing less.

I think it took Alpha Media 10 years to finally do something else with that 103.7 translator. Who knows what their plans are for 99.9 and 106.1. Maybe they kept 103.7 and 106.1 as KYKX simulcasts until they could find someone to lease them.

I thought 99.9 had the same coverage as 103.7, but I was wrong. A hypothetical new format on just a 99.9/106.1 simulcast is not feasible because the signals do not overlap, unlike 103.7 and 106.1.

While I enjoy Jack FM, I agree that there can be a better use for such a great signal as 106.5 than an automated format. East Texas needs an AC station like Star 102.1 in Dallas. KVNE is topping the ratings, and I can’t help to think that is because there is a big demand for AC in the Tyler/Longview market and people listen to the closest thing, Christian AC (like they did in Dallas with KLTY before KDGE flipped to AC).

Anyway, I’m just happy that AAA is available on the East Texas radio dial, even if it’s just an HD4 simulcast of WXPN.

I am more than willing to bring Adult Contemporary back to the East Texas radio dial after I graduate from UNT!
 
I finally got over to East Texas with a good HD radio. Heading down I-20, I didn’t get a lock on 100.7 HD until almost US 271. HD4 is carrying XPoNential Radio, which is a separate network operated by WXPN and not the main WXPN feed. It is basically a jukebox. They play deeper cuts. KDAQ 89.9 also has the same programming on its HD4. KETR 88.9 HD2 also carries it. A WXPN direct simulcast would have been nice since they have shows and DJ’s. From what I understand, the same programming is on KSCL Shreveport, which Red River Radio bought recently.

It’s something to keep an eye on because I wouldn’t think Red River would buy a radio station to run a jukebox 24/7. Perhaps some local (Shreveport) AAA programming is in store.

KUHF in Houston has XPoNential Radio on its HD-3, rebranded as “Mixtape”. Pretty wide variety of music that is not heard elsewhere on terrestrial radio.

We considered that for overnights on KSKO after Undercurrents went away but it requires a robust internet connection.... a little mroe robust than i even trust starlink to be.

It depends on if the place that I'd work at would want it.
 
I was over there a couple weeks ago and listened. Red River Radio flipped their HD4s to alternative as “Alt Red River.” They simulcast KSCL. I’m not sure when it happened, but it was between mid February and the beginning of May.

It’s an alternative format that focuses on songs from the last twenty years with about one 90s song per hour. They play more mainstream alternative (for people who aren’t afraid of oxymorons.)

Centenary College actually mentioned “Alt Red River” last year when they posted a news story about KSCL being sold, which can be found here: Centenary’s KSCL radio station joins Red River Radio Network

(Please let me know if I cited that right.)

I didn’t find the story until recently. I figured they would do some variation of alternative with KSCL but was thinking more in the line of what KXT does with AAA.

Now if we can only get a translator or two to bring KXT to Tyler/Longview. Hey, at least cash in on the 90s nostalgia and flip KTUX back to 99X. :)
