WBTV-3 75th Anniversary

WBTV Channel 3 has just marked its 75th anniversary as the first television station in the Carolinas, having signed on in July of 1949. Of course it is the TV successor to AM radio station 1110-WBT, which celebrated 100 years of broadcasting 2 years ago in 2022. A strong legacy of broadcasting by WBT and WBTV, although they are now separate entities but still share the same bulding at One Julian Price Place. WBTV an original long standing CBS affiliate.

Remembering legacy personalities such as Jim Patterson, Doug Mayes Clyde McClean, Fred Kirby, Betty Feezor, Bob Inman, Janet England, Jim Thacker, C.J Underwood, Mike McKay, Barbara McKay, Paul Cameron, Maureen OBoyle, and Eric Thomas.

I was there 1968/71. Started as a projectionist and booking movies for Best of Hollywood Monday nights & Theater 3 on thursday nights when I left.
Knew them all. Super nice and friendly! A few more names to add to list........need some help here.

WBTV was our news station from 1965 to 1969 and 1973 to whenever I decided I liked Jerry Peterson on WSOC-TV better than whoever was doing the weather on WBTV.

That would be Mike McKay on WBTV. Knew both Mike and Jerry, nice men. No way could I ever do what they did. That green screen isn't easy!

Jerry Peterson actually used a real, big board, weather map on the wall. Which he personally created by hand everyday, very artistic. He also used the green screen for additional hand drawn weather graphics and the radar, which indeed requires talent so you are pointing to the correct town. I always found his folksy presentation pleasant and entertaining. Then they moved in a more serious direction when he was replaced by Ray Boylan. Then Steve Udelson who recently retired.
