GSP June numbers - WYRD soars

https://ratings.****************/content/arb191

With the political climate being nuts recently, it’s paid off for Audacy, with WYRD cracking almost a 7 and a half share to hit second place 12+. I’m sure they’ll make sure everybody knows, but rather impressive for a station that hasn’t seen top 3 in years. I believe it did several times after it added the 106.3 simulcast. WEPR strangely did much more poorly than usual.

The Lake surged almost 2 points to be half a point behind WROQ. Hot 98.1’s new normal seems to be around a 4 share or below. I wonder if 106.3 will be able to keep or grow from the half point share? I wonder if WSPA-FM and WOLI/the associated 105.7 translator are already single line reporting?

I looked back in old books and the last time WYRD was that high was back January 2021 when they were #1 for that book at an 8.6.

Yet they still haven’t done that well on 98.9. I guess it’s a moot point since they sold it, but in my opinion there has still been little ratings impact from that massive signal upgrade. And during the primaries, I never heard any ads from areas that didn’t advertise on 106.3 outside of the immediate market area.

I would have put WORD on 93.3 and moved TRG to 101.1 and left Magic at 98,9.

It wouldn't have done me any better, as the only kind of talk radio I have truly enjoyed is that of sports talk radio.
I’ve been listening to The Fan more. I like the new afternoon show. Not sure about the morning show. They have the FM signals in mono so they get out pretty far.

The politics on 98.9 make me ill.

Indeed. Other the midday libertarian show the line-up is full on ultra conservative tinfoil conspiracy fluff.

Speaking of the primaries, which is probably why WYRD has such a high number this book, none of their endorsed/preferred candidates won LOL.

Their original candidate for 3rd Congressional District lost badly and they picked the wrong guy in the run off.

Adam Morgan…the less said the better lol

Lee (no-so) Bright’s comeback they hyped up ended up being DOA.

A bit out of touch perhaps? I know Tara has always done a very poor job of trying to cover local/state issues, and she’s always out the loop on that end.

That race had bad blood because Tara interviewed Sheri Biggs and she didn’t like some of Biggs’ answers about campaign donations Biggs’ made, and they said she was dodging Tara’s questions and was rude during the exchange.

Charlie James said the runoff was “closer” because “so many listeners in our long time coverage area in district 3 heard the interview with Tara and changed their minds.” WORD has done a terrible job with coverage of local and state politics for years. They’re always talking about national issues.

98.9’s format clock also makes me ill. It feels like they cut to that AI weather chick like 5 times an hour.

What's the point of local hosts and paying their salaries when they are pretty much only talking about national topics?

Audacy prefers to have local hosts in most day parts on their news/talk stations. They don’t have a content distribution arm like IHeart and Cumulus do and they probably don’t want to owe either anything for their shows. This comes from Entercom which the current Audacy top brass (from Entercom) obviously still believes.

Funny you mentioned this. I never heard what Charlie said but Tara did touch very briefly on it as well, basically saying the same thing except she sounded like an annoyed and whiny 12 yearn old girl who just got denied ice cream. But she also only spent a minute reflecting on it before moving onto to some other hairbrained conspiracy. Only reason I tuned in that morning was because she’s so messy when she’s wrong LOL.

I hear a lot of promos on 98.9 where they really try to promote they have coverage in Gastonia and Rock Hill. Why would somebody in either city want to listen to WYRD vs. WBT? 🤣 they also love to mention WNC towns where 98.9 is spotty and everybody is listening to 570. IMO, the majority of their listenership and ad dollars are probably the same on 98.9 as they were 106.3 because it’s the same core market listening, and the numbers haven’t really changed.

I don’t listen to conservative talk much but I don’t mind WVOC or WWNC. Less screaming and the hosts seem a bit more grounded. Even Glenn Beck. The national hosts 98.9 does have, like Mark Levin, are overmodulating the audio with the non stop screaming.

Oh, I did check out a bit of the Christmas in July for Magic. I was quite surprised. No sponsor and commercial free. Elise Riley came back to host middays and take requests, they’ve recorded some new (in house) liners and I heard them calling it “Magic Upstate” and they’re also promoting 101.5 and 95.1 now. Seemed to have a lot of listeners from social media.

I may be nuts, I may be reading too much in to it, but it seems to me Audacy wants to keep the Magic brand warm in case they need it at some point.

That's why I don't like those promos-- they're trying to push listeners of other stations that are more moderate in their tone to come to the loud, screaming tinfoil conspiracies of WYRD, as I take it.

Could you post that here https://radiodiscussions.com/threads/any-christmas-in-july-music-on-the-radio.772418/#post-6739844 ?

It seems like Audacy has improved the audio situation on WFBC-HD4 over the past few weeks. Louder audio and no longer fading out. 93.7 HD4 could still sound better (louder) and 98.9 HD2 especially since they can allocate more bandwidth. The Block on 93.7 HD2 unfortunately sounds pretty bad too.

Side note, off topic but not deserving of a thread: as of last week, 89.3 is now WLFJ, the -FM has been dropped. This is a result of the calls being dropped from AM 660 in 2019.
