The NBA (and WNBA) TV deal thread

NBC and Amazon will air one of the conference finals in alternating years! That's going to get fans who don't choose to do business with Amazon howling for sure.

I’m seeing a lot of howling from baseball fans this year, saying they already have cable and shouldn’t have to also get Peacock and Apple + to watch all the games. Have to wonder what if any backlash there will be from sports fans when leagues sign with multiple streaming services and if the leagues will care.

Leagues care about money. They don’t worry about the consumer.

To a point yes. The NFL leaving CBS high and and dry in 1994 for FOX is a great example of that. But Inside the NBA transcends not just NBA Basketball highlights, but society as well. The off-cuff everything go aspect on that show will never be duplicated.

"Transcends society"! Puh-leeeeze! My lord, all this worship and pedestal placement for a freakin' highlights show! The world won't end if an "everything go" (whatever that means) program about professional basketball disappears or shows up on another channel in a different form. TNT wants GAMES. Without the games, it has no conceivable reason to keep producing its NBA gabfest. Basketball fans would watch Inside the NBA and flip to ESPN, NBC, Peacock or Amazon to watch actual games afterward. How does that help TNT?

CBS did not go out of business for the 4 seasons they didn't have the NFL.

The world will not end if Charles, Shaq, Ernie, and Kenny are unemployed for a brief time. Outside of Ernie (who's hinted that he may retire regardless of the outcome), none of them will be in the poorhouse, or even out of broadcasting, for very long.

CBS tanked in the ratings without the NFL.

Well NBC may be stupid but Amazon isn't & I have a feeling that everyone but perhaps Rrnie Johnson (Who I believe handles TBS' Sunday afternoon MLB coverage of I'm not mistaken) will make the move to Amazon next year.

I can't see THE BEST studio show ON TELEVISION simply going away, I just can't

The NBA needs WBD more than WBD needs the NBA. They were making a huge mistake Sir Charles Barkley even said that in the media good for WBD to sue the NBA. As they matched the deal with Amazon which the NBA had no right to give it to Amazon when WBD matched the offer will be proven in the lawsuit. Also, NBC should always have gotten a Conf final game every year they shouldn't have to share with Amazon which that package will be a flop like TNF has since moving to Prime as I don't buy the spin that the streaming services say about the sports games they air since it is lies and just half-truths as well.

In NBC's case it's expanding from regional edition to national editions of the NBA. Boston, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Chicago and Sacramento are ones that have the NBA on NBC Sports Regional but this new contract expands them to Peacock and national broadcast rights.

I'm sure they did on Sunday afternoons during the regular season and playoffs, but I doubt their Prime Time programming was hurt. After all, they still had 60 Minutes as their Sunday Night lead-in. And between 1994 and 1998, it always started on time.
