SBS AND THE COMEBACK

Had a meeting today about the soon to be 5th Regional Mexican station in the Houston market and a certain long time morning show making a comeback. Jc Hidalgo who happens to be the Regional Mexican pd for sbs will just happen to be in Houston in a few days. Was told things will start to move quickly.

Finally! Some new info during the purgatory period of Praise! Now, the big on air staff question is, who's gonna be in mornings? Raúl Brindis? Or SBS' syndicated RM morning host "El Terrible?" Brindis will definitely be part of the station in some way, shape or form, even if not specifically in morning drive.

Now, SBS' newest HD subchannel addition to LaMusica (not in this market) just got leaked.

We can only assume the branding for KROI will be leaked via LaMusica artwork popping up on Google at some point as well.

Here's the leak for the HD subchannel leak:

When I was composing the report about KROI last night, the page for WMEG-HD2 was active on LaMusica.com. I don't believe it was a leak as much as something that was supposed to be live until it wasn't.

Also a big difference between an HD subchannel and a full-powered station that will potentially change call letters.

I'm assumed it was a leak because it wasn't included in the station list you can scroll through on the LaMusica website.

There's an article about WMEG's HD2 channel here.

It's basically the English-heavy format that WMEG had before the move of Gangster, Funky Joe, Molusco, Burbu and all the motley crue to WMEG. when it became more of a mainstream Latin CHR.

I've said this before and I'll say it again; TelevisaUnivision is making a big mistake by not getting in front of this. KQBU-FM could easily be flipped to flank KQQK and make it harder for SBS to enter the market. But instead they seem happy riding it out with a sports network that isn't long for this world.

I guess corporate is more interested in selling the radio division that improving it.

New favorite dumpster fire?

KQBU when it was Que Buena was pulling listeners away from KLTN. Then they removed songs from playlist that KLTN had.
If KQBU was to return to some different regional mexican, it probably have little impact.
Is La Mera Mera making a comeback? 🤣

The two stations were Regional Mexican, but the particular “regions” were different, with specific demographic targets based on state origin in Mexico.

Have to wonder if potential entrants to the Houston market might be passing on KFNC in the hope that TU puts KQBU in the block. 93.3 has the better signal.

If any 2.0 version of LMM had the same level of success as the original, we’d be talking about the “next” new format of 92.1 around the spring of 2026.

I’m curious to see if the new RM format on 92.1 kills off one or both of La Grande 104.5 and La Mejor 102.5.

IIRC, KQBU-FM coexisted just fine with KLTN when they both had different playlists. KQBU focused mostly on Banda and other mainstream "Grupero" music (albeit, to poor ratings) while KLTN focused almost exclusively on Norteño (which made them a powerhouse in the 2000s).

KQBU and KLTN started cannibalizing each other when the old Estereo Latino began playing more mainstream hits and abandoned the mostly Norteño format.

Norteño just works in Houston. It would make sense for KQBU to go head-to-head against KQQK.
