MMJ Reporters in E. WA Making Less Than Working Fast Food

My argument is that this is short-term-ism at its worst and is ultimately destructive in multiple ways.
In my view, the root of the problem is that; like many industries affected by unpredictable world events, broadcasters are trying to return to doing business the same way that was successful before the 2008 recession, social media advances, and more recently, the pandemic. So, let's see if we can cut employee costs further by allowing what amount to interns as reporters. Let's see if we can get them in as part-timers so we don't have to pay them benefits. If that doesn't work, then let's pay them minimum wage, or slightly above. Hopefully, there are enough gullible, young people who want to get on TV that we get a long-running supply. Will any of that improve, let alone maintain the overall quality of our news product? As long as it's good enough to keep the number of news blocks alive, it's good enough.
Moreover, news still brings in money. It doesn't make sense to stint on the quality of the product. (I bet Boeing wished they had paid more attention to those door plugs. Same principle.)
You're right. It doesn't matter whether we're building airplanes, cars, or TV news, once the quality of the product suffers and word gets out (after all, it's right there on TV), then your audience flees and so do your customers/advertisers. With all the competition for eyes and ears these days, I wouldn't assume you'll ever get that audience back.
Not that this discussion is going to change anything. This is a message board, after all.
Of course not, but it is an interesting, perhaps depressing, view into the mindset of some people working in the broadcast biz.
Fox is a propaganda channel that occasionally uses news as window dressing.
Even back in the day, Roger Ailes said Fox News was less about news and more about entertainers talking about the news.

That applies to basically any business including health care and police. Everybody is looking to cut costs, and there are no uniform pay scales except the minimum wage, which is about $7 an hour in half of the states.

Just imagine what Edward Hopper could have done if he had been inspired with these posts.

That $16 an hour would go twice as far here in the Midwest. But, there are many in broadcasting here making $8 an hour while Burger King pays $15 an hour.

OK now I see what you mean by the $8 minimum wage is coming from and it's the federal minimum wage that some parts of the country follows. Also I get the impression about broadcasting makes money came from and its from stats from the past where there was "highest paid anchor" if it's local then places like Los Angeles, Chicago and New York gets mentioned for that or it gets discussed by stats on the national level.

Here are some of the stats on the highest paid anchors on the national level. Note this list also includes talk show hosts in the study.

Revisiting this topic, I noted this story on FTVlive.com regarding a job listing for MMJ's in the other Washington...DC:

Nobody wants to pay for news. If the readers don't want to pay, why should employers? The readers have lowered their own bar.

Ya gotta pay your dues if you wanna sing the blues, honey it don't come easy.

This is TV, but I get your point. As I've stated prior though; that means Nexstar has essentially waved the white flag for quality. It's not helping local TV news by putting rookies on the air just because they work cheaply.

Thank you Ringo.

Assuming there's a relationship between pay and quality. If you're a journalist, you don't do it for money. If you want bucks, do PR.

Bob Woodward makes his money writing books. Everything else feeds that monster and drives book sales.

But as we've talked about prior in this thread; the cost of living in the town they work will dictate whether even ambition will allow someone to make ends meet.
The original thread talked about Eastern Washington State stations in a small group looking for bargain basement reporters. This is Nexstar and Washington, DC.

I lived in that town and had two jobs. It's not that tough. I have no sympathy. Get a roommate. Share a house. Thats what I did.

Sure, but it's not 1977 anymore.

It wasn't 1977 then either. There are more options now than in the 90s.

I know people who work at a local station and at Sirius. Not hard to do.

My GF did shiftwork in radio and freelance at the Pentagon. That's good money, plus a security clearance.

If you get laid off from one, you still have income.

And they're making $20 an hour? If they're part-time running games in the basement at SXM in gawd awful Eckington they make even less, but they're not delivering breaking news on TV either.

It ain't brain surgery.
You're right it doesn't compare, but having to write a story and then deliver it on camera in a way that doesn't come off like you're an idiot or make the station look foolish means one has to know what to write and how to present. That's why it's still called journalism. The TikTok dancers can stay on TikTok.

You make it sound like everyone is Jack Anderson or Jack Germond. TV news is you get assigned a story by a desk editor, you go out and get nice video, do a standup, and a wrap for the late news. It's not enterprise work. Its chasing fire engines. Those guys with the big bylines also got their own sponsors. It helped them pay for the nice townhouse in Georgetown. That's frowned on today.

It's certainly not just being blonde and knowing how to stand in one place while talking at the same time. However, I've seen some cringeworthy examples where some 'reporters' believe striking the same pose as on their Instagram page is the same thing. It doesn't do much good for credibility as a source for local news.
