Rock 92.9 To Bloomberg

In a move nobody saw coming, 92.9 WBOS will become Boston's new home for Bloomberg Business programming starting Tuesday, September 3.

I find it very hard to believe that there is more of a demand for Bloomberg on the full power signal than there was for classic rock. And when I say "hard to believe", I mean that I'd have an easier time believing that a Yeti lives in the Prudential Center than that this was a smart move.

But hey, what do I know? I'm not running a dying business into the ground little by little.

Probably not more audience demand for Bloomberg than the also-ran Classic Rocker, but Beasley is likely to be making more profit taking lease payments from Bloomberg than they were from what David said was a horrible biller. Weren’t they bringing in less revenue than WPLM?

On another note, I wonder if this could be the route Emmis is taking for their 98.7 signal in NYC? Hmmm

That's entirely possible. And nowadays, if your local radio dial sucks you can simply stream what you'd rather hear. As someone who has listened to quite a bit of news talk over the years (going back to the 70s), I find Bloomberg to be very dry and uninteresting. It's ironic that they will outlive WCBS 880, a product that is orders of magnitude better.

Bloomberg is an excellent source for business and financial news. It’s not just stock jock silliness like CNBC. I’m sure I’m in minority here, but I listen to a couple of really crappy Bloomberg signals and glad they have a legitimate signal now. I’ve got all the Classic Rock I ever need on my IPod. And love it. It travels everywhere.

It has nothing to do with demand. It comes down to what will provide more ROI for Beasley and its shareholders. A steady LMA payment from Bloomberg with no overhead other than transmitter costs will provide a more consistent profit than programming and selling ad time themselves. Same thing with WCBS New York for Audacy. This is where we are now as a business.

Rock 92.9 stinks. I would say "good riddance," but technically it's not going away completely.

Perhaps the station would've been more profitable if it weren't programmed so poorly.

Beasley is in deep doo-doo financially speaking, so I'm not surprised they are looking to LMA a big but underperforming signal in a big market. This will undoubtedly be cash flow accretive.

Bloomberg is the perfect format in 2024 since radio has become about as exciting as discussing insurance these days. There's no passion at all for the programming or talent anymore. It's all money, money, money and nothing else. The product just seems like a nuisance to both the people running the businesses and the observers on this site. Does anyone care about actual entertainment anymore? @BRNout summed it up pretty well, I think.

Too bad another music station is leaving the air, even if it was somewhat bland

I think if they didn't force that horrible morning show on Boston, WBOS might have done better.
So how is Beasley's national morning show now ?

I know the economy is the way it is. But does anyone see another station tweaking thier format. Rock is all but gone in Boston besides WZLX.

I'd love to see someone give alternative another shot. Adam 12 seems to have the reverse Midas touch, so I would recommend someone other than him to be PD of such a station locally.
If someone were to program an Alt station in Boston along the lines of WDZH or WRXL, I think it would earn pretty decent numbers. That said, that ship has sailed long ago.

Adam puts in a mighty effort though. He does his job. I see his posts online everywhere. I suspect the misguided programming on 92.9 was out of his hands, there's a lot of excellent rock music they did not play that would have made them more mass appeal. Instead they focused on headbanging.

It's absolutely stunning that Boston has NO alternative rocker, no mainstream rocker, and one classic rock left standing (for now - they've become essentially sports talk in the morning )

WERS? You've never had a clearer mandate. Do what KEXP does in Seattle - BEATING 100kw commercial alternative KNDD and heritage 100Kw Rocker KISW. Just do it. Stop being a wimpy AAA and start playing some rock music!!
