WTMP Could it make a dent into Q105

Since it's flip to classic hits WTMP in my opinion is sounding really good, I know it's on AM and two translators but the mix is good, No jocks but I'm wondering with another Translator or two does anyone think it could be a success?

Or am I just loving it because it's new?

If they could get some good solid jocks like maybe Mason etc would it hurt Q105 in the ratings even if it was a 2-3 share?

With the amount of people complaining how bad Q sounds now is there a window for a station that plays a small amount of 60's - 80's
 
With Tampa Bay so spread out, it is hard to see WTMP making a serious dent in WRBQ on a series of translators and a medium strength AM.

So the Radio-Locator info says they're "Motown & Classic R&B". So I go to their "website" [just a link to listen online] and I hear....the Rolling Stones? I didn't know they were considered R&B! Next a liner to listen worldwide online and then a cover by the Isley Brothers of the old Seals & Croft tune "Summer Breeze"...which I had never heard before and really liked, followed by.....The Hooters "And We Danced. So either the definition of Motown and R&B has changed or the info on Radio-Locator is incorrect. Or maybe a rogue A.I. playing what it wants on overnights.

WTMP adjusted its format a few months ago from Motown and R&B to Classic Hits, making Radio-Locator's info outdated.

But.....but.....but....I went to their Facebook page and the header says

AM 1150 WTMP / Classic Motown and R&B from the 60s,70s and 80s​

Maybe that page isn't updated either since last post was August 1oth and had nothing to do with the music.

Actually the 10,000 watt1150HD signal is pretty strong to the south; in my vehicle radio, I had picked up a good HD signal as far south as Sarasota and of course that means it comes in well in Palmetto, Bradenton, Parrish etc as well as southern Hillsborough County (Sun City, Ruskin, Sun City Center, Riverview, Brandon etc)….where the daytime AM signal fails though is to the north (they are directional and have nulls to the north); I have seen the HD signal fade to the regular signal in parts of Carrollwood and the Forest Hills section of Tampa)…..at night the AM signal (no HD at night) is only good in Tampa, south of the USF or south of Fowler Ave. Their two translators, which are both in HD are both 250 watts (max translator power) and have fairly good signals, one for most of Pinellas and one for most of Hillsborough County.

On the other hand, since Q105 and their sister station, WQYK 99.5 moved their towers from atop at 22 story building in downtown Tampa, around 2016 or 2017; they have lost coverage, don’t know if it’s the less tower height or other reasons, but some areas in Hernando county that used to be able to pick both the 104.7 and 99.5 signals reliably are now not able to always pick up either station…..and that is of course, where streaming comes in handy and both do stream.
 
As soon as I get north of Tampa I start to lose the Signal for WTMP. (1050) At one time I could listen as far as New Port Richey.
 
The problem is the AM signal. You have to be on FM to compete in a music format. Maybe at least 1 more translator to fill in more area. I'm listening now and I like what I'm hearing. Except no spots. Just heard one for "binge tv" after 60 minutes. It's on Spectrum, so maybe a trade? Can't pay the bills that way. They are promoting their app, so that's good.

Seems like it’s a toy for the owner. The W225CQ and W271DL translators all have HD. An Omnia 11 at each site. The owner has a private jet. Few commercials on this station. He has the money to spend. He owns other stations that are making money.
 
I guess I’m in the minority here but I’m not impressed with the new WTMP format at all. At first listen it seems like a big variety but I’m hearing the same artists over and over. And most of the songs have been played to death on other stations. How can I get excited over hearing “Hot Blooded” for the 7,000th time?

I preferred the previous R&B oldies format. At least it was better focused and occasionally went deep.
 
If it is a toy with money to burn and "they" wanna be different and just maybe.... get the attention of a desirable demographic, they should play classic alternative with 80's wave. It makes zero sense to play the same 400 classic hits that you can already hear on market wide stations The Dove, Eagle, Shark, Mix, and Q.
 
1150 sounds great, much better than that R&B format they had months ago. Just wish their FM signals would reach cleanly into the North Port area. I can get 1150 down here but lots of static from power lines and forget it during the summer storm season. Great music btw!! Great classic hits, good selection and variety of music and playing many songs that I grew up with, unlike other stations that do not.
