ESPN, ABC and other Disney channels dropped from DirecTV in contract dispute

MadMan

Banned
Walt Disney Co.-owned channels, including ESPN and ABC stations, were knocked off DirecTV platforms Sunday after talks to reach a new distribution deal collapsed.

The blackout — which affects DirecTV's nearly 11 million customer homes

That will pi$$ off one too many bar and restaurant owners, I'm sure. Especially with MNF around the corner, and the Saturday college football (with ABC getting SEC).

Aaron Rodger lock the door on Disney & DirecTV like he did with Disney & Charter Spectrum last year. It's really all about MNF when a deal will get reached as I don't see it lasting long as DirecTV needs Disney more than Disney needs DirecTV, I think what will happen is that Disney XD, JR, NATGO Wild, Freeform, FXX and a few other channels will get dropped in my opinion. The problem is DirecTV doesn't offer broadband like Charter Spectrum does.

One thing that should be noted that wasn't in the linked article, if you're watching ABC via DIRECTV Stream, regardless if it's a Disney O&O or not, it's blacked out, those that get DIRECTV via a satellite dish in a non-ABC O&O market can still watch.

What does Aaron Rodgers have to do with any of this?

Disney really needs to stop focusing on Disney+ so much in times like this
Wait what?? Just like NBCU with Peacock, Disney has a ton of money invested in Disney+. You don't just walk away from promoting what could very well be the future of video-on-demand media. The idea is to push more viewers to a subscription rather than an advertising model.

This'll be a short holdout...holiday weekend for college football, and the NFL isn't on ABC until Monday - a week from today.

Patience, grasshopper...

Then (assuming that nothing's changed in the last couple years), maybe Disney should include the ESPN channels in the ESPN+ app without requiring a separate cable/satellite/streaming provider to be subscribed to before being able to see them in the app. I'm not holding my breath, given the extra cost that would be required.

The Spectrum/Disney holdout last year took place nearly smack dab at the same time as this one, in fact worst, blacking out the whole Opening Weekend of College Football last yr. & in that time frame until Monday afternoon leading into MNF, Spectrum got a deal with Disney done & pretty much what they wanted, so DIRECTV might be the same. Personally, I'd have to see it to believe it if this conflict goes beyond next Monday, if that's the case, then all the chatter about this dispute being a potential game-changer/long term seems legit. And it may very well be the last considering ESPN will launch their own streaming service next year.

Disney is not going to listen to this advice because they know where the current median audience is at and it's on the Disney+, Hulu and ESPN TV apps.

What they should do is develop a paid stream option for the sports bars, etc. and walk away completely from DirecTV.

Two disclaimers: (1) I watch ABC OTA on KABC/7.1, and (2) I wouldn't care if every sports telecast went to a pay platform.

Oh ... third disclaimer: I was a DirecTV subscriber from 2001 until 2013, when the Dodgers signed an exclusive deal with what was then Time Warner Cable to carry the games that had been on Fox Sports West and TWC tried to extort a huge carriage fee from all of the other providers, including DirecTV. I told DirecTV that although I sympathized with them re the extortion, for me it was "no Vin Scully? no more subscription".

Try telling this to the knuckledraggers and mouthbreathers on social media. Oof!

They believe both services are one and the same.

Why do these disputes only happen between one cable company and a broadcaster? If the broadcaster is charging everyone exuberant fees, shouldn't all of them either pay a lot more, or disconnect them? (Sling is still able to carry them, and not charge much.)

Did you say, “It’s tiiiiiime to unsubscribe!”?
