AM Frequency of the Week: 1690

East Tennessee: Sometimes a very weak WMLB, Avondale Estates GA if its on at all. WVON, Berwyn Estates (Chicago), IL or WPTX, Lexington Park MD at various times. During the 2016 eclipse, I had WVON just past totality.

Retro/other: Western Ohio, WVON, (at the time oldies WRLL) could sometimes hang in for the day in the winter.

From west Houston TX

Daytime, nothing
Sunset, either or both WMLB Avondale Estates GA with conservative talk or urban talk WVON Berwyn IL are often heard. Closer to Denver sunset, KDMT starts to dominate w/Relevant Radio
Night, a jumble of the aforementioned 3 stations
Sunrise, KDMT often hangs in there for a while after my sunrise

South Mississippi:

Day: nothing
Night: usually strong signal on WMLB Avondale Estates, GA - Freedom 1690
WVON Berwyn Estates, IL or
WPTX Lexington Park, MD would rarely come in when WMLB was off.

Here in Wood Dale, IL in the near NW suburb of Chicago:

Daytime: nothing but WVON Berwyn, IL with good signal.
Nighttime: still WVON but weaker and also nullable. When I null WVON I usually hear CHTO with Greek language programming or WPTX

DX/RETRO: prior to WVON taking over the frequency WPTX (Lexington Park, MD) and KDDZ (Arvada, CO) used to be common. WMLB also used to be easily heard. Other station that I managed to hear on this frequency was the weather forecast TIS (WPUA401) from Aurora, IL but they are no longer on the air. I have not yet heard CJLO or KSFG.

Denver, CO - Local 1690 KDMT, day and night. "Relevant Radio". What's really relevant to this group is that the station's signal is surprisingly mediocre for how close it is to me. I could probably null it out if I used a loop. 1600 KEPN is on the same site (though the coordinates are slightly different) and also surprisingly lacks the kind of heft you'd expect from a local signal. There may be something not quite right at the site.

From the southwest suburbs of Chicago ...

What was originally WRLL and is now WVON bombs in here from its transmitter on the southwest edge of Chicago (sharing a tower with 1390, which also used to be WVON, among other calls) about six miles away. But, once on an early March morning in 2023, WVON was running an open carrier, and through that silence came in a 17-minute span both CJLO Montreal and WMLB Avondale Estates, Ga. (Plus WEUP 1700 in the silence as well.) The fun lasted about 45 minutes and then my speakers almost blew out and WVON said hello.

Clifton, New Jersey

Days: I get a faint signal of WQRL700 Wayne NJ, which is a 10-watt travelers information station. The transmitter is less than 10 miles away from me. Near sunset, I get WPTX Lexington Park, MD.

Nights: It's either WPTX Lexington Park, MD or CHTO Toronto, ON. I once received WMLB Avondale Estates, GA on 09/29/2021.

Did you ever get Nutley's Travelers Information WPXA218. Its been off for at least 13 years now.

Nutley, NJ: Daytime: Nothing, used to get WPXA218 from my township before they went off the air for good years ago. I'm just located out of the range of WQRL700 from Wayne, NJ which is a bit further than Michael, that it's not audible

Nighttime: I only try for WPTX from Lexington Park, MD, love the format.

I don't think I ever got WPXA218 at my house, but I received it when I went to Clifton Commons near the Clifton-Nutley border. By the way, WPTX recently flipped to the True Oldies Channel.

DFW, Texas

Daytime: Nothing
Nights: KDMT is the most heard, with these others occasionally in -
KDMTCOArvadaRelevant Radio Catholic talk.
WMLBGAAvondale EstatesConservative talk fair with fading
WVONILBerwynID "The Talk of Chicago WVON 1690" fair, alone on channel

From NW San Antonio:

Day: An empty frequency here, but I did heard KDMT in Arvada, CO, once via winter daytime skywave.

Sunset: KDMT appears on a regular basis.

Night: Often, KDMT has a fair signal but with some fading. Occasionally splatter from 1700 KKLF (Richardson, TX) intrudes a bit. If I aim NE, I can partially null KDMT and sometimes hear a weak WMLB in Avondale Estates, GA, WVON in Berwyn, IL, and/or WPTX in Lexington Park, MD, for brief bits.

Sunrise: Usually, KDMT has an even better signal. Sometimes KFSG in Roseville, CA, mixes in.

Yesterday morning just before 7 a.m. CDT, propagation was favoring KFSG, and it was on top with a surprisingly decent signal. It was playing CHR songs by Pink and Fifth Harmony, followed by an instrumental from Pawel Blaszczak. Then came a "KFSG - Roseville/Sacramento" ID. I had been waiting 10 years to hear an ID from this station.

DX/Retro: I've heard CHTO in Toronto just a few times at night.
