First Presidential Debate 2024

I agree. Helped by the "off mike" policy,, the two moderators did very well in my not-so-humble opinion. They were both vilified by the conservative media, as was CNN prior to the debate... with claims that they would ask leading questions, give more opportunity to President Biden than to Trump and so on. Yet the two were professional, and the question list did not favor any party.

There were plenty of border security questions that allowed Trump to pontificate, and there were abortion and rights questions that should have favored the President. Questions were well written and well asked.

I watched the first debate in 1960 where a smooth Kennedy reamed a sweating and nervous Nixon. This was well done, and my compliments to CNN and the two moderators. (Those who know me are aware that such a compliment does not come easily!)
True, JFK came off as more on top of his game; Nixon always (to me, at least) seemed nervous about something, even when he was in the White House. People who listened to that debate on radio thought Nixon came off better; those who watched it gave the edge to JFK. Looks do count for something; Kennedy looked tanned and rested, Nixon almost like a ghost. That made as much of an impression than anything they said. Let's fast forward just a bit and see them in perhaps their most memorable moments: Kennedy saying "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country." Contrast that with a sweating, hesitant Nixon saying, "I am not a crook." JFK's line speaks to a now-departed era when the complacency of the Eisenhower era was ending; Nixon's line still echoes as a national joke. And despite Thursday night, Biden will still come off as the statesman, Trump as the buffoon when their administrations are studies 60 years from now.

I remember in college when I was in journalism and mass communications the teacher used tapes of old debates to analyze how the people in running talked and how they got nervous or confident at certain points of the debates. I do remember the instructor using a Nixon one.

I didn't watch the debate I would rather watch Paint Dry haven't watched a debate since George W. Bush & John Kerry's 1ST debate. Since I'm not voting for either Biden or Trump like 2020 voting 3RD party or write-in, if I was Biden's handlers I would've canceled the debate just doesn't look good should've just said this is my only term and retired into the sunset in my opinion.

I suggest that you read up on Project 25. You may want to reconsider your answer.

I like Biden and he’s a FDR Democrat. But in a debate you gotta learn when to concede a point whether right or wrong.Former president Obama wisely did that in his debate with Hillary. It helped people realize how much more sensible he was.

Does anyone think the viewership will break the record number of 84 million people who watched the first Clinton vs. Trump debate in 2016?

Not sure if the other stations in the New Orleans market & nearby are following suit (wouldn't be surprised), but seeing because of Tropical Storm Francine bearing down on Louisiana, WWL (CBS) is bumping coverage of the debate to sister station WUPL.

NPR is carrying audio from the ABC broadcast, were carrying it all and because of the 4 hour time difference, its at a more palatable time for elders here

In terms of how the broadcast nets are handling the coverage with graphics, mainly above the 'CNN Presidential Debate' banner. Even PBS involved too albeit with their graphic on the top left of the screen. Good thing CNN didn't do what they tend to do with debates/town halls in terms of feeds given to Newsource affiliates having the clean feed with the CNN bug at the top of the screen. They're giving them a separate feed considering CNN is showing the question being asked. Also, ICYW, at least here in Phoenix, ABC is ahead.
Pretty much the same utilization of graphics for those simulcasting the ABC feed as it was for the last CNN debate with CBS moving their graphic above the ABC on-screen graphic, Also, CNN, Telemundo, Univision, & KTVK (IND/Phoenix sister to KPHO CBS).
