John Boy & Billy Ink Renewal

Fun fact: JB&B started doing radio at the old 108 WBCY in the early 80's.

I remember him on WBCY.
Yes I remember John Boy and Billy originated on 107.9 when it was WBCY-108FM with the rock format. Then they parted ways with management and moved to 99.7-WRFX, the newer rock station. Where they remain to this day. Later Robert D. Raiford joined their show as the newsman and curmudgeon commentator. I enjoyed their show back in those days.

WBCY later flipped to a hit music format, then adopted an AC format as Sunny 107.9 and then the Link, and now Mix 107.9. Bob and Sheri later emerged as a long running morning show on 107.9 before parting ways with Radio One and are now heard on K-104.7.

Interesting 107.9 is the common link between 2 long term major morning shows in Charlotte.

John Boy left first, a dispute with the program director, Bill Martin maybe? Billy stayed and was teamed with Catfish Pruitt. The results were less than spectacular. John Boy had a tough time getting traction at WBCY until Billy came along. The duo make for great radio. same with Bob and Sheri. Bob credits Sheri for saving his bacon and rightfully so! Bob often tells of how he paid her out of his own pocket until he could convince management to add her to the station payroll.

It was more of a Top 40 station when the show started and they didn't necessarily like the music.

I was listening when they started.

I knew him as Channel 36's news anchor. Or maybe Channel 18. I'm not going to look it up.
WBCY later flipped to a hit music format,
As I said above, that was while they were there.

Who do you think will replace JB&B in CLT, & could they make that much of a difference in the ratings? Some iHeart morning show from somewhere else in the country? CLT's demographics show that 'RFX ratings are low because of Classic Rock, even though JB&B "Perform Strongly" in other markets. It's a must-listen, legendary, heritage show in CLT. JB&B had close to 100 affiliates by 2000. Tough showbiz/Radio days these days

Interesting question. A lot of iHeart classic rock stations happen to have openings in morning drive right now. Seattle, Boston, and Chicago come to mind along with Charlotte. So something is up. The problem with JB&B is they're very regional. They wouldn't work in any of those northern cities I mentioned.

Up north they are (were?) on country stations for the reason you mentioned. It has been many years since a country version was introduced.

"John Boy and Billy off mornings at The Fox" is just as much front page news as "Man walks on moon" or "Paris Peace Accords signed"
Yeah, well, with the paper printed three times a week, I can tell you what wasn't front page news last week. It was treated as old news and only had small stories on the inside.

Shame on the Observer for not giving people a front page. Although Democrats ... well, 9-11.

True. John Boy said he hoped to be heard in the North, too, though many doubted that would work, including Howard Stern. Mel Karmazin, boss to both Howard and John at the time, asked JB&B to move to Atlanta to syndicate their show in '93
