The CBS 2025-2026 season thread

A “Smart” idea???
I see CBS is already preparing a replacement for Matlock, Elsbeth, or Watson depending what shows fail first lol.

I get CBS has a long term agenda but seriously it doesn’t work/make sense to knock off even a moderately successful show just because they need the airspace for ordering all these pilots.

A long term agenda of having a pilot pipeline? Yeah, that’s kind of how the business works. Veteran shows end. New shows fail. No one is “knocking off” shows because they need airspace for…pilots. Many pilots are ordered that don’t come to fruition, or get reworked over a period of time.

Exactly. Ken Levine (M*A*S*H, Cheers, Frasier and others) had a great post about what happens with pilots:

Unlikely to be Elsbeth, which opened big:

...and finished strong:

The Matlock reboot isn’t long for this world. I don’t know what’s planned but Bates made waves saying it’s her last project:

I liked Harry’s Law, the series she was in 13 years ago, but it only lasted two seasons.

You really should read the first two paragraphs of the Variety article you linked to.

I did and still skeptical unless this show is just going to be short 10-13 episode seasons as opposed to the whopping 24-24 episodes a season CBS was pushing on many of its procedurals before the writers strike.

Now if this iteration lasts as long as the original then I will be pleasantly surprised 🙂 (And that’s entirely possible as the Equalizer remake has surpassed its original).

I think, with few if any exceptions, new scripted one-hour dramas are just going to be 10-13 episodes a season from now on broadcast and 6-12 on streaming. Keeps costs down and streamlines storylines.

Is it really a reboot, I don’t think it shares anything from the original show.

It is not.

It is a reboot as the very definition of a reboot is
that A reboot of a TV show is a new version of a popular series that reimagines the original concept and starts over from the beginning. Reboots often feature new cast members and disregard the continuity of the original series.

Here are some differences between reboots and other types of media adaptations:

Remakes: Remakes stay true to the original characters and premise, while reboots reimagine the concept.

Revivals: Revivals usually occur after the original series ends.

They Could have made it a revival if they really wanted to, as Kathy Bates is young enough to be Andy Griffith's daughter. And Matlock's daughters were on the show at the beginning, so it wouldn't have been too great a stretch to make a show with one of his daughters. It's one of those things where many fans would prefer the show stay in that same universe, but if feels like many Hollywood producers would rather start over.

Here's the problem: Matlock's original run was 30-40 years ago, and it appealed to an over-50 audience even then. Yeah, some younger people have seen it in re-runs, but if you built it on the back of the original, the audience that would get it without a ton of backstory and character expositon would be over 80.

Better to start fresh, acknowledge the name (because even most of those who haven't seen the original have heard about it), and move on.

I’d have been ok with called her his niece who followed in his footsteps and then the rest can be a new canon.
