Mid 20s Broadcaster with 10 years experience

Hey guys! Glad to have joined the forum. I am in my mid 20s and I have been doing radio since I was in high school at 15/16 years old. Been blessed to say I was taught radio the LOCAL way. Local DJs, local news, local sports & local wx. I have had a stint in a more corporate environment and hands down LOCAL is the ONLY way to go. I have been a play by play broadcaster covering a 5 high school county. Done numerous air shifts mostly being mornings or middays. I have done sales. programming duties and pretty much all things from the time I was 18 and went full time out of high school. I have learned everything on the job through first hand trial and error and been very thankful to have had very knowledgeable people guide me along the way. I call the beautiful blue ridge mountains of NC home and wouldn't dream of living anywhere other than western NC or East TN!

Do you do talk radio or music ?

Welcome SyFy. You got an early start and already lots of experience under your belt.

Local Radio still works in places with a strong sense of community identity. I sell at a station in a great community with a strong identity. It's like radio in the 80s here. Lots of people don't understand small town radio where you know some of your listeners and where they rely on you not just for local news and information but also entertainment. It's where you build relationships with businesses large and small who spend from $100 to a heft sum with you monthly. The fact you can sell, do on air, programming and play by play says much. Many are on air and programming but never sales and too many have done sales and have little interest in on air and programming.

We all hear about the national stores and Amazon destroying local small town businesses. That is true in many respects but there are many more businesses that are not affected by this invasion in retail. There's still money to be made if you decide to have a spot rate the little business can afford.

And small town folks listen to a station that truly serves them. Over 25% of the county in one case (18-34 & 35+) from among 50 stations on the dial. It's not just heritage stations. The station with all those listener was insignificant 15 years ago, not widely known. It takes great programming and a solid sales effort but if you will truly serve the local area, you can do well.

The thing I can say is there's always more to know. Be curious. Bug people. Think of ways to succeed and follow your passion. It seems you have been!

I don’t actually work in radio …. I have called into shows in the past but I don’t know if you’d really consider that as experience or not.

No that doesn't count, although I did my best Radio work on the phone, ironic~

Welcome, what stations have you worked for?
Do you do talk radio or music ?
Appreciate the welcome! I have done mostly music as far as formats are concerned. Mainly Country & Christian are what I have the most experience in. I have worked for WWWC Radio where I handled play by play duties for sports broadcasts along with a daily airshift and handled sales accounts. I have also worked at WKSK and then the Curtis Media owned (Insert Eye Roll HERE) WATA in Boone along with the other so called "Stations" that are housed up there. I know currently work for WKBC.
