RADIO ONE TAKES OVER LA MEGA MEDIA

So today i get a screenshot of an email sent from la mega to what I am guessing are old clients and partners announcing that they have changes coming and have been acquired by Radio One. I dont know if this only applies to Cincinnati or the entire company. Very interesting news. So does that mean they kill the La Grande brand? Do they now have 2 Spanish stations in Cincinnati?

Would you able to post the screenshot or is that currently private information?

From what I was told its radio and digital. I am not sure what that means when it comes to la mega nota since its printed. i know some people in Columbus that might now more i'll reach out tomorrow. I guess now that the staff has been told more info will be shared. Not sure what it means for the Urban one Latino staff.

Bad move for radio one. They were about to be the only station in town and would have taken the entire cake and instead they gave up the la grande brand for a burnt out la mega brand and will have to share profits. I'm hearing they will do the same in Columbus and Cleveland.

Mega is a lot more recognizable, international and catchy brand. A number of Latin American countries have had unrelated"Mega" branded stations for decades. Of course NYC's "Mega 97.9" has influenced the popularity of that brand quite a bit as well. Everyone wants to copy NYC radio.

"La Grande" is typically associated with reg. Mexican formats.

Nearly 40 years for the Mega in Venezuela, 25 years for "my" Mega in Argentina and 37 years for Mega in Puerto Rico.

And it sure is better than the old "Super K-Q" That name came from the original WSKQ in the 70's in New York when the primary listener base was Puerto Rican and a "big" station there was WKAQ. But when the Spanish speaking part of the Puerto Rican community aged out of the sales demos, "K-Q" was no longer relevant as there was no such name in the Dominican Republic where the predominant sector of Spanish dominants came from.

Yes, it's a well known brand in Mexico itself, too.

Share profits with whom? The "Mega" brand is on plenty of non-SBS stations.

Google "radio station named mega" and you can see lots of them in the US. It's even on an oldies station in Fresno!

As RadioFixerCLE said, "La Grande" is a very Mexican station name. If they are going a pop/reggaetón direction, it is a horrible and dated name.

And 30 years of RCN's "La Mega".

And "K-Q" sounds a lot like "cacu," a Dominican slang used to describe "big headed" and/or "dull" people.

Good point, but I only seem to hear that in Santo Domingo, but not in El Cibao and other areas. And most of the migrants are from the "interior" of the country, not the Capital.

Ironically, there is now! A former morning host from WPAT even came from there.

Not familiar with it... "my" station is "Z" where I put together the morning show, El Gobierno de la Mañana, in 1976.
