Kris Kristofferson at age 88

I just received a press release from his publicist:

Artist, singer, songwriter, actor and activist Kris Kristofferson passed away peacefully in his home in Maui, Hawaii Saturday, September 28, surrounded by family. He was 88 years old.

Born Kristoffer Kristofferson in the border town of Brownsville, Texas on June 22, 1936, Kristofferson changed the language of country music, with extraordinary internal rhymes, Shakespearean iambic pentameter, and socially progressive subject matter that found the personal within the political.

He was a Rhodes Scholar in Oxford, a defensive back, a bartender, a Golden Gloves boxer, a gandy dancer, a forest firefighter, a road crew member, and an Army Ranger who flew helicopters. He was a peacenik, a revolutionary, an actor, a superstar, a sex symbol, and a family man.

RIP, he was a great guy & stood up for Sinéad O’Connor after the backlash from her SNL protest against the Pope & Catholic Church. He wrote a great song about her:

"Sunday Morning Coming Down" was one of his greatest songs. It's been covered by numerous artists.

Kristofferson did a fine job in "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore". His contributions to music and film will be remembered. RIP...

Here are more articles on the death of Kris Kristofferson:

I was fortunate to spend some time with him. He was a gentle man with a wicked sense of humor.

Out of all the things Kris Kristofferson did in his diverse career, the "Highwayman" single is the first one I learned about, as a child. The unique sound appealed to me from a young age. Much later, it was in our rotations at several country stations I worked for.

"The Highwaymen" greatly improved Glen Campbell's prior release of the song.

Glen cut the song because it was written by Jimmy Webb, who wrote several of Glen's early songs. It wasn't a hit

Glen brought the song to Johnny Cash, who was going to do a record with Kris, Waylon & Willie. The four of them recorded the song with each taking a verse, and it went to #1.

Good song.

One of his best songs was recorded by Johnny Cash. "Sunday Morning Coming Down." They don't write 'em like that any more.
