Oakland Hills Fire Coverage

Here now the fire is getting national attention because of the same thing the last time this neighborhood faced a wildfire was in 1991.
Your description of the area needs some elaboration. The area devastated by the 1991 fires was in different neighborhoods several miles farther north - Hiller Highlands and adjacent - and was at high risk of roaring down Highway 24 into Oakland neighborhoods such as Rockridge. It did not affect Interstate 580. The current fire is off Keller Avenue, south of what was Holy Names University, and on the other side of 580 from the Eastmont Hills area. It caused the closure of 580 for several hours yesterday, though reports indicate it's now open again. The current fire is also much smaller, though not yet fully contained. It is fair to say that it's the worst fire in Oakland proper since the 1991 firestorm.

Initial Reports said Oakland Hills area neighborhoods until it was revealed to be near Highway 580. The first thought was its within proximity to the one that hit in 1991. Now local news outlets have specified which neighborhoods got the evacuation orders and it checks out.

Oakland firefighters said Saturday morning that the fire is at 50% containment. At least 15 acres burned.

Oakland Fire Chief Damon Covington said about 200 firefighters from several Bay Area fire departments were called to back up the Oakland Fire Department after the fire broke out at about 1:30 p.m. on Friday off Interstate Highway 580 and Keller Avenue. Cal Fire assisted with air support.

"Without them, we would be having a very different conversation," Covington said at a press briefing on Saturday morning.
