The Spot

Everyone complaining about this station is like, “Play new songs! No, not these!”
Who’s complaining? All I see is the new adds being pointed out. Also, it’s funny how we’ve already forgot what was mentioned at launch:

-98.7 and will potentially absorb a lot of stuff that Jack FM is playing.
-100.3 is more valuable than 107.5
-If Audacy would get rid of Jack, no more licensing fees

These 3 things weren’t said by me and I also forgot they were mentioned before I posted the other day in this thread. Looks like there are actually people who agree with my thoughts! Crazy how that works!!

I don't think Audacy cares about the licensing fees. They inherited Jack from CBS, and I can't think of a single market where they've dropped it. It's top rated in most of the markets, like Dallas and LA. They get a great brand with Jack. It's more recognizable than The Spot. They get imaging and marketing with Jack. It's very easy. As I said, the same guy oversees both stations, so he can co-ordinate the music so they don't conflict.

I suppose it could've changed, but, last I'd heard, Jack billed more than 98.7 and had the highest margin in the cluster. That was a few years ago, but I can't imagine anything is much different.

This is a silly thought, but I’ll toss it out there: Maybe Audacy makes The Spot sound more like Jack, then sells 100.3 to EMF and moves the Jack branding to 98.7? Yeah, it sounds ridiculous (at least the brand move) but……not totally outside the realm of possibility.🤔🤯

Why are people so obsessed with this idea of Audacy selling a Top 5 market station to EMF? This is the fourth time it was brought up in this thread.

We know that EMF has gone through a management change, and the new CEO isn't spending as much as the old one.

Look over at Los Angeles, where Audacy owns stations with both Jack and classic hits formats. It can be done without cannibalizing either station.

Because DFW is a HUGE evangelical market? EMF will want K-Love in that environment, not necessarily on 100.3. Maybe wait for Salem to collapse and grab KLTY? MediaCo gets out of the radio business making KBOC a target?

Audacy and EMF can always change their minds.

As I said, likely a silly idea.

When has EMF sold a full market FM? Once it's gone, it's gone. No changing minds.
I think you meant Audacy, not EMF.

You misinterpreted my post. I was saying that Audacy could change its mind and decide to sell 100.3 after all. And EMF management's current attitude towards acquisitions could shift as well. Not holding my breath.

Given where the evangelicals are concentrated in the DFW market KBOC would likely meet EMF's needs. Best of the MediaCo signals.
I think Audacy will sell off all of their smaller markets before they start looking at Dallas.
I'm keeping an eye on their stations in Austin, as well as whether they'll get rid of the 250 watt true daytimer AM in Houston (KIKK).

Either. Audacy won't be selling a Top 10 market FM, and EMF doesn't have an unlimited budget anymore.

That is more likely than Audacy. But once again, it will be expensive, and EMF is currently over budget on building their new headquarters.

Maybe because 100.3 was part of the original deal?

@lanceventa posted this on 7/28/2024 in another thread:

“I guess it can be said now since it won't be happening, but 100.3 KJKK was supposed to be part of a larger deal between Audacy and EMF that eventually became just the sale of 94.1 Memphis, 102.5 Buffalo, and the rights to the K-Love IP in Dallas with the KLUV call letters. The original larger deal was also to include stations in Sacramento and Miami and/or Orlando. Never was 107.5 involved nor was there legitimate talk of La Grande moving to 100.3.”

Like @Mediafrog+ mentioned, Audacy and EMF can always change their minds. It’s entirely possible a new deal could be in the works.

That was several years ago. Since then, Audacy has gone bankrupt and a new ownership is in charge. They may see things differently.

As I said, circumstances for EMF have also changed since then.
That was last year... But Audacy is not selling anything in Dallas unless it is required a divestiture as part of a bigger acquisition. Things are progressing on that front.

Almost all of the songs mentioned on this thread have been staples on Audacy's classic hits stations for more than several years now.
They’ve been staples on Audacy’s classic hits stations for years, besides 98.7 The Spot. I believe this was done purposefully to differentiate The Spot from Jack FM. I think something is happening soon to Jack, so they no longer need to keep the stations separate.

You posted this on another thread back in June:

“JACK and The Spot will not co-exist long IMO. This almost seems like a pre-emptive move where something happens to 100.3 (sold? Another station sold and it moves there as previously mentioned?). The playlist on JACK could then be folded in to 98.7 and it could segue in to variety hits with the “Spot” branding. That seems to me why they wouldn’t want use BIG as in Phoenix and Philadelphia. Just my opinion…plus the licensing fees would no longer be needed for JACK.”

Do you still believe what you said?

However, as I said earlier, Audacy has classic hits and Jack together in other markets, such as LA. There are lots of songs on KCBS that are also heard on KRTH. However, KRTH has taken a more rhythmic turn, which we also see with KSPF. Meanwhile I don't see Coolio on KJKK or Chili Peppers on KJKK.

There is a third Audacy station that is duplicating some of the songs being played on KSPF, and that is KVIL. A lot of 90s alternative songs received airplay on CHR at the time. That's why you're seeing alternative bands like Chili Peppers on The Spot. Audacy has the same situation in LA, where it also owns KROQ.

As I said, the way these stations differentiate is in presentation. Songs aren't unique to a format, and truthfully, they haven't been for a very long time.
