iHeart phasing out NBC News Radio newscasts

Hi, I noticed on the podcast feed I subscribe to for NBC News Radio Newscast that they changed the logo to 24/7 Newscast with iHeart logo. I have noticed more emphasis on advertising on those podcasts. And the other ones don’t mention NBC News Radio either. Has the deal with Comcast expired to where it’s no longer being used effectively October 1st?

The title of your post is misleading. It sounds like iHeart is phasing out its news department. Not true.

You may have noticed a "rebranding" away from NBC. That's how the post should have been titled. It's not like scores of people who staff a 24/7 news operation are in danger of losing their jobs.

The NBC News Radio brand is a sub-brand of their Total Traffic & News division. But my understanding is that the anchoring was done by the Total Traffic people, and included audio from NBC News.

My sense is that there is becoming less interest for this kind of traditional network news. The market is mostly AM stations, and we know where that's going. iHeart also syndicates Fox News. Plus they do unbranded 24/7 news:

Where's it going? Depends on NBC. They seemed to like extending their brand to radio, but don't want to staff it. There aren't many options available for that. This was easy for iHeart to do, but I would bet they didn't have many affiliates, and we know the ad market is bad right now. So perhaps the cost exceeded the revenue.

It wasn't intent to be misleading; That I do apologize for. I just have noticed more ads on the following: NBC News Radio: Newscast

They still carry the chimes and introduction on that and the other: NBC News Radio: The Latest

But they used to carry the NBC News Radio banner on their and technically they still do. But I imagine not for too much longer as the other podcast/broadcasts have dumped the branding:

NBC Radio News is only on a couple stations I've heard over the years, and local conservative talker KPTR 1090 runs NBC Radio News at the TOH. I still miss hearing the NBC Sports Radio liners when that network was on the airwaves. Sounded really cool, and the NBC Sports talkers were as good as the others... but the Sports Talk ship is sort of sailing into the horizon. In the 2010's it was a big new deal, with 6-7 networks (ESPN, Fox, CBS, NBC, Yahoo, SB Nation, and ESPN Deportes). Today, it's the domain of maybe 3 networks, and I guess it's at equilibrium, but not growing anymore (aside from Sports Bet talk, which is slightly different). I think NBC left the Sports talk field 5 years ago.

NBC News Now & Dateline 24/7 are also live streams on iHeart. I believe the former popped up right after they started to switch the internal newscast live station to the 24/7 News branding.

Perhaps related to this subject, Sirius has added two NBC News channels:

SXM again with their entire emphasis on putting out brand partnerships for marketing purposes instead of creating good radio. NBC News Now is yet another simulcast of a video channel, same as CNN, MSNBC and FOX News which already exist on the platform. Where is the radio news station on this radio service that people pay for?

Meanwhile, iHeart has the 24/7 News channel on its iHeart app which is made for listening (not watching), and it's free.

Again...heritage doesn't pay the bills, but it's too bad such a powerhouse network back in the day is history. But then so is original parent company RCA.

Keep in mind it was a powerhouse network for a relatively short time. The minute WW2 was over, the focus was to transition to TV. That was where the money was, that was the emphasis, not on radio. RCA was sold to GE in 1988, and GE immediately sold all radio assets, including the network. Of course most recently GE has gone through immense financial upheaval. GE sold NBC to Comcast. So a lot of changes in almost 100 years. The companies that replaced GE and RCA as drivers of technology are Apple, Google, and the rest. They're not interested in broadcasting.

Hi,
So I look at my podcast feed for what was NBC News Radio Newscast: I tried to play a podcast of the newscast from yesterday; turns out the feed is not active. And on the speaker link which had carried it since earlier this month as 24/7 newscast is no longer active. This is pretty much now the official end of NBC News Radio (At least in podcast form) I know that in Seattle both KIXI and KKNW radio still carry those newscasts on linear terrestrial radio. But for how much longer remains the question.

Try this instead:

You might hear the same anchors as you heard before.

iHeart pays to use the NBC News branding. They don't for 24/7 branding. That's the difference.

I already have listened to it. You are correct on iHeart using the NBC News Branding for 24/7 Audio channels similar to what SiriusXM is doing. But as far as traditional radio only that seems to now be a thing of the past now.

What that tells me is they're keeping the relationship, but limiting the usage of the branding, perhaps as part of their overall deal with NBC.

This relationship allowed them to have an exclusive on the summer olympics from NBC Sports.

The NBC News name is seen as a negative for conservative talk stations. They won't carry a network with MSM branding. This unbranded service solves that problem.

It is basically the same product. I hadn't heard NBC News Radio on iHeart for awhile. Thanks for your post. It explained what happened to it.

FWIW, Lisa Taylor, who has had an accomplished career in radio, is retiring and was carrying a daypart for NBC News Radio. I assume when refers to continuing with them, she means the 'NBC News NOW' product available through iHeart.
