WOR To Cover NYC Marathon

I actually heard this once... in Duluth, Minnesota. Townsquare Media used two chase vehicles, one for the men's race and one for the women's race, with a pair of announcers each. I think there was a studio "anchor" as well.

As far as who will be listening? Probably very few.

Can't be any worse than NASCAR or the Indy 500 on radio.

I don't know if they still do it or not, but when I worked at WBZ in the 90s, Boston Marathon live coverage was a huge thing for us. We had reporters all along the course, the legendary Gil Santos (longtime voice of the Patriots) anchoring, and a sold-out roster of sponsors. We won awards for our coverage, too.

In those days, you'd have lots of spectators listening to the coverage on portable radios as they waited for the leaders to arrive.

The only thing stupider is announcing wrestling on the radio. "He threw a Gramby, now going for a firemans, two back points, single leg takedown, now a half nelson, over on his back, five count, three back points, he's up, another takedown, he's back on his back.......pin!" Our local LPFM did a couple of them and people were like "What the hell am I listening to? Go back to music!" Needless to say, they did.

Amateur wrestling? Yikes! Pro wrestling on the other hand, that would be interesting on the radio. I prefer to watch it on TV, though.

A big 50kw FM in NW PA I worked for did/does high school wrestling on the radio. local sports is a big deal up there.

It is on a Sunday when no one usually listens and when no one listens to the regular programming in that time segment. So why not? And why worry about it. It will either bring some interest to the station or it will do no harm to wasted weekend hours. I wish the good luck

"What's to see? A woman from Norway, a guy from Kenya, and 20,000 losers.” 😅
You put that in quotes. It's sort-of funny, but whose line is it? Because if it's you, I think it's very unfair to all those runners. The vast majority don't enter to compete to "win", they're competing with themselves to see if they can make it to the finish line. I couldn't make it to the Brooklyn end of the Verrazano if you spotted me the uphill section and a pair of roller skates. (I suspect you couldn't either.) Props to those who train for the marathon and then make the attempt.

Even more strange: Back in the 60's and 70's, WTIL in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, used to broadcast the national domino championships live.

While dominos were enormously popular on the Island at the time, the "play by play" was horribly boring.

Since a lot of people do some casual running or jogging, it may be reasonably interesting (or at least not too boring) if there are interviews with people participating in the race. They could discuss how they train and prepare for a marathon, as well as what they experience during the event.

I think that's called "Radio for Insomniacs" for those who have difficulty falling asleep
