Goodbye Hot 106

See post #25. Same logo on both sites.
I was just confirming your speculation on Post #25, good sir.

I listened for a bit today on 106.3 -- they're running sweepers announcing themselves as "102.3 and 106.3, The Wolf." Perhaps a simulcast? This morning, WMOS's log was running about 5 minutes ahead of WWKX's. I'm also interested to see who they may tap as personalities.

I listened today as well, and, with the exception of the legal ID, they are running it as a simulcast (as Jacko noted in post #42). It was completely jockless all weekend. But WMOS runs jockless in all dayparts except mornings.

My guess is that once the kinks are worked out, the simulcast will be complete. Perhaps they will have in-house people track middays and afternoons. Vic Edwards is already doing afternoon news on WPRO, but perhaps Nick G. will track middays (since he isn't on Hot 106 afternoons anymore; he is still tracking PRO-FM nights) and Amy Pontes will track afternoons.

Simulcasting WMOS makes sense, but I am not sure that it is going to help Cumulus secure the top ratings spot for Lite. WHJY is probably 90% classic rock, and its signal is excellent everywhere that WWKX's signal is strong. In addition, 'HJY is one of those rare stations whose listeners still care about the jocks. 'HJY plays everything the Wolf plays AND it has a heritage morning show and jocks with name recognition. I just don't see how the Wolf will take a bite out of 'HJY. But maybe I am wrong.

Maybe not. But what they've done is spread the costs of one station over two. So it's a more efficient operation. If you look at the 3rd quarter numbers, Cumulus is increasing revenue, but the revenue isn't keeping up with expenses. That's why they lost money. They will need to do this in more markets to cut the bleeding in order to start turning a profit.

Given that Cumulus New London is now housed with Cumulus Providence, do you see further simulcasts of stations with the same format? Will Q105 become a simulcast of 92 PRO-FM? Will WXLM simulcast WPRO (WXLM already airs WPRO's morning show)?

The articles posted previous mention how the 102.3 and 106.3 frequencies compliment each other well. Not sure if the folks in Newport County would agree. I grew up in Exeter, and 102.3 came in OK, but had a tough time approaching North Kingstown, and 106.3 was not any better. A translator on Aquidneck Island may help to better full-state coverage.

More staff at 106.3 The Wolf:

Good choices. Both personalities are well known in the Providence market. Will Gilbert is also a long-time weekender at both WPRO-FM and Lite 105.

I am enjoying having another rock station on the preset. I like how they focus on classic rock, and have personalities but keep it about the music. Not sure about “The Wolf” moniker, but a welcome change to the RI radio scene.

I like the music too, but it isn't differentiated from 'HJY at all. 'HJY, with its superior signal and its heritage, plays every song on the entire Wolf playlist. I am not sure that the Wolf will register in Providence's ratings, even among men.

maybe it’s what Wolf isn’t or playing less of like Green Day, Puddle of Mudd, Godsmack, etc. I don’t know their playlist but it seems mostly classic vinyl.

Yeah, the variety is different. But 'HJY plays every classic vinyl song that the Wolf plays.
Maybe HJY did play just about every song The Wolf has, but currently HJY's playlist is pretty limited. Only Paul and Al will sneak on a deep cut on their show. The Wolf does occasionally play some '90s cuts, but I have yet to hear anything from this side of the year 2000. I've even heard "Couldn't Get It Right" from the Climax Blues Band on The Wolf. HJY would never touch that one!
