Could Jam'n 94.5 be gone soon?

With the flip of Hot 106 in Providence, this makes me wonder if Jam'n could also bite the dust pretty soon. Does it get good ratings? Is Hip Hop a dying format? I know there have been many Hip Hop stations throughout the country that have gone under, such as Jamz 102 in Orlando. And I think if anything were to happen to Jam'n, they should finally put WBZ on FM. What has been taking so long?

That question has been asked here many times, and the answer is it's not something iHeart does. They have lots of powerful AMs, including WOR and KFI. None of them have FM simulcasts. A few, such as WLW or KOA, have FM translators. The issue is that moving an AM format to FM doesn't always work. It definitely didn't help WBAP in Dallas. Ratings have cratered since adding the FM simulcast.

All news is a format that generally appeals to over-65. Moving it to FM doesn't help lower the demographic. Jam'n may not get big ratings 6+, but the station attracts a very different demographic for a company that mainly aims for older demos. The fact is WBWL The Bull is lower in the 6+ than Jam'n. But country is a core format for iHeart, and they need a station in Boston for their national programming and contesting.

I've always wondered why they don't swap formats on jamn and the bull. It's crazy Hot 106 flipped to classic rock of all formats. WBOS was just flipped for playing the same exact music.

No need WBZ is already on WXKS HD2. Why make 1030 worthless?

Nope, they were flipped because Bloomberg offered Beasley some cash to LMA the station. It had nothing to do with the music.
Right, and Cumulus consolidated its New London area stations into the Salty Brine Broadcasting Center in East Providence fairly recently, so those stations are, by and large, running out of there. Classic rock is still a fairly reliable FM format, so to them it makes sense to put it on 106.3. All signs point to a 102.3/106.3 simulcast of The Wolf.

Ok but what about Q105? Will that also be simulcasted on another frequency? It would make no sense since they already have 92 Pro FM. If anything, Q105 would become a simulcast of 92 Pro FM.

A Hip Hop Station should not be 4th in that Demo.

They're leaving money on the table with awful programming.
How would you recommend that Jamn change its programming? I am not questioning you about the need; I am just curious about how you would do it. Is it the morning show? Too much of a focus on throwbacks? Is the music too bland and conservative? Or is Boston just not a market for hip hop?

It would make more sense to move WRKO to FM. Kuhner does very well in the morning, Grace Curley, all though conservative, attracts a
much younger demographic and Howie Carr has always done well in afternoon drive. WRKO consistantly beats liberal news-talk WGBH-FM.
Last WRKO's north south pattern loses many potential listeners 20- plus miles west of Boston.

As I've said many times, it's not something iHeart does. If they did, they'd be more likely to do it with WBZ than WRKO.

Cumulus added an FM simulcast to it's news/talk WBAP in Dallas. From the minute they did that, the ratings plummeted to where it's one of the lowest rated FMs in town. So you can't assume the AM audience will transfer to FM.

Proof?

WRKO consistently beats liberal news-talk WGBH-FM.

Not this month.

We're comparing a 100K watt FM station that goes as far west as Athol to a directional AM station you can't listen to clearly in Foxboro?

It doesn't matter. As I said, iHeart generally doesn't move AM formats to FM. If they did it in Boston, it would be WBZ, not WRKO.

The way for other hosts to solve the reception problem is talk to Howie Carr and get their shows carried on the other suburban AMs.

Which goes back to why iHeart is opposed to moving AM signals to FM.

Plus the fact that their main interest is moving listeners to the iHeartRadio app. They see that as the future, not FM.
And this is actually probably pretty smart. The reality is that FM is pretty much just as "obsolete" as AM... it just happens to sound better, so it's getting a longer lease on life...
