More change at KNBR

The fact is that Cumulus owns 5 stations in SF and only one makes money. That's pretty brutal.
What's the point of owning 5 stations in a major market then? Operating at a loss is not sustainable. There's no reason to believe that Cumulus can fix anything...

Also in the Cumulus announcement (according to SFGate.com): KSFO 560's conservative talk format will move to the bigger 50kw 810 signal. No word on where 810's 2-years-old sports betting format will go. Maybe to 560? Or maybe 560 will air something else entirely?

810 has a better night signal, more consistent signal now that switch time will moving into PM drive, versus 560. Yes 810 has some nulls day/nite, 560 ND day but Directional night.

I am betting (pun intended) KGO's sports gambling format disappears completely from local AM airwaves.

Either that, or it gets demoted to 1050, with 1050's ESPN programming possibly moving to 560.

I do think the greater likelihood is Bloomberg programming showing up on 560.

If sports betting were moving within the Cumulus cluster, it would have been mentioned in the news release. Cumulus only gets paid if it airs. Every day it doesn't run, they don't make money.

So I read this as you do---after two years, sports betting failed.

And as far as the KNBR studio move---huh?

You're in the stadium all day, every day for a team that plays 17 games a year, at roughly a game a week---and only nine games at that stadium (eight of those games are on the road).

We're already in week 11 out of 18 for the current season.

And you're now 40 miles from the stadium where your other marquee team---the San Francisco Giants---play 162 games over 26 and a half weeks (a chunk of which are also road games, but there are also long, consecutive-night home stands).

This has me watching for a sale of all or at least a majority interest in KNBR to Denise DeBartolo York.

I think that's a great idea. The holders of Cumulus debt need to get long term financing. No investment company is going to put money into radio after all the bankruptcies. Not just KNBR, but the entire SF cluster! Why not?

Because I doubt even she wouldn't put her money in radio. She's no idiot. She doesn't even own Levi's Stadium. But I think you're on the right track. This move isn't about programming. They're not doing this for better radio programming. They're doing this for sponsorship money. I don't know how they're doing it, but someone else is paying for this. And as I said earlier, this isn't a long term move. They're not selling Battery Street. They can move back whenever the sponsorship runs out. Or it's a distraction. Don't look at the talent we just fired. Instead look at this new studio we have.

The reason for posting this from radio insight, is the part where at many clusters there is no one left to be able to update the websites to reflect the on air staff changes, as well as handling the backlog of paperwork for the exiting employees. Will the last employee leaving the building please turn off the lights?

And now, SFGate reports that nobody---not even Cumulus---seems to know what's up with the KNBR-Levi's Stadium move.

With KNBR now at Levi's stadium, there is no live broadcasting from Battery St. The only studio they need is for production. Is a move to much smaller office space in the works? You know, technically, everything can be done at the national level. Why even need a SF office?

Tell me you didn't read the post I linked to without actually saying those words.

If her show is not voice tracked, it still can be done from a different location. The days of doing a live show no longer requires a studio. The future is in the 'cloud'.'

I understand, but that wasn't my question.

You asked "Why even need a SF office?" Answer: To meet with clients. With transmitters at various locations, they need a central place to insert commercials. A lot more things happen at a radio station besides live programming.

I did read it. I don't think it's fake news.
Okay. You said "with KNBR now at Levi's stadium, there is no live broadcasting from Battery St."

The story says:

When asked about whether KNBR would be based entirely out of Santa Clara, Blumhagen pointed out that some shows were already hosted at Levi’s Stadium studios. “As our plans continue to evolve, we currently do not see a significant shift in that usage.”

Blumhagen also said Cumulus is targeting the “end of first quarter 2025” for getting the “secondary location” up and running, one that would replace its downtown San Francisco studios. He also said there currently is no “official final date” for the company’s time at the 750 Battery St.

Where's Nikki Black? I don't know. My point is that if she IS the last live in studio employee on Battery St., then why don't they move to a smaller less expensive office space. Afterall, everything is about cutting costs, right?

My take, and we'll see how well it holds up:

Cumulus didn't mean to include the Levi's Stadium studio in the news release. Someone f***ed up. It's happening, but it's happening 2nd quarter of 2025, and will likely involve the sale of KNBR to 49ers owner Denise DeBartolo York.
