SBS Buys KROI for $7.5 million

If you are referring to the connections and influence Raul Brindis possesses, it seems you may not fully grasp the challenges and liabilities he brings to the table. Consider that his ego and personality are the primary focus, rather than the rest of the station. His show remains unchanged since 1999, and his ratings were slightly lower than those of "El Bueno, La Mala y El Feo." Keep in mind that Raúl will not receive backing from the leading Spanish television giant, Univision. He was at the forefront of market trends with legendary campaigns involving multi-million-dollar giveaways and prominent billboard advertisements, for many years, KLTN was synonymous with Raul. He was being outperformed by both of Estrella Media's Rim shot signals. I believe you may be attributing too much credit to him, considering the circumstances have shifted. This brings to mind Don Francisco's transition from Univision to Telemundo, which we can all agree was a significant misstep.
Who in Houston misses EL TERRIBLE? Many fans would agree that he had lots to do with Piolin leaving Univision.

Why would the team that is running POWER 105.3 try to purchase a FULL FM and flip it? Would make more sense to more power to 97.5.

Power ahora con más Poder.
If the rumors are accurate, transitioning the power format to a larger signal is likely ineffective, as power serves as a secondary format intended to complement the Mexican Regional format, where the primary audience truly exists and follows in the Houston Market. When attempting to market any translator to national agencies, merely mentioning the term "translator" often results in losing their interest. However, having a full market signal with acceptable ratings and format, along with a translator that meets similar standards, significantly improves your chances. The focus is entirely on sales and revenue...

I am not here to defend Power 105.3 FM. Your overly fixated on them? Were you fired by them? Have they done something to you? Power 105.3 FM continues to hold a limited presence within the Spanish/Urban market. If the rumors are accurate that the team at Power plans to acquire KFNC and transition to a full-market Mexican Regional format, given the likelihood of significant investment in these properties, it can be assumed they will have the resources to fund a TV campaign, promotional giveaways, billboards, and similar marketing efforts. I doubt millions will go into purchasing to only do things half ass. Allow me to reiterate: "La Grande 104.5" and "Power 105.3 FM," along with any translators, are not significant competitors in the Houston market. Translators act as minor placeholders that fail to sufficiently influence the market, Nielsen ratings, or agency purchases. Ultimately, success is not determined by the quality of the product alone, but by the ability to translate that product into revenue and profitability.
I mentioned them because you mentioned them first. And would feel the same about all the translators that are currently on the air.

I guess we will see how this plays out in the next few months, but I have set my mind on who the winner will be.

Agencies don't care if a station is a translator or a 100 kw Class C at 2000 feet. They care about the station's rating. If a translator is in the top 5 to 10 stations, it will get bought just as fast as the high power station.

100% I can name a few translators that killed it during political season and do very well with agencies.

Speaking of winners, which translator is the best?

Signal wise and programming wise?

La Grande 104.5
Sol Radio 101.7
Power 105.3
in signal i would say 104.5 and 105.3 are pretty similar only difference is that 105.3 has to deal with 2 105.3's that are closer and interfere vs 104.5 the closest 104.5 is Beaumont and the other one is rebroadcasting the same programming. But 105.3 Covers well. In programming, all 3 are different and service a different audience.

Are you in sales?

Are you in sales?

Killed it? Offering spots for $20? Please understand, I have great appreciation for translators don't get me wrong but let's not overstate their financial impact within the Houston Metro Area. I believe a small amount of money may have been allocated to translators for political campaigns, but using the term "killing it" in this context is highly exaggerated. Although I am retired and have never worked in sales, I do understand that if a radio station is not generating revenue, registered with Nielsen, or receiving agency buys, it will inevitably be sold or flipped.

Last full day for Praise on 92.1 today? Listened for a short while yesterday (Monday) and didn’t hear anything about the impending change during their live and local midday show. Interestingly the fill-in host let the previous “Praise 92.1” branding slip through.

Still nothing on the SBS corporate site regarding a Houston launch other than job listings.

Radio One is running Praise as a zombie. It is what it is. They aren't going to say anything.

Why would there be? When the deal is closed there will be an announcement.

I think that was for the other guy. We know you do it all.
And, yet those first 6 years as go-fer, board op and janitor let me see inside a very successful station (R&B WJMO) and one that had no commercials for months on end (WCUY) and was a total loser... and then wrap it up as intern at a 5 station group in North America's largest market. After that, you are ready for almost anything.

Not quite. Remember that Praise is on the HD-2 of KMJQ, and has been for the past 13 years. The format goes back to 2006 and its original incarnation on 92.1, and will continue on the HD-2 after the KROI sale closing. RO hasn’t done this in a few months, but in the past they aired plenty of “We’re moving!” promos redirecting 92.1 listeners to the HD-2. And the branding has been “102.1 HD-2” for the past 18 months, though occasional references to 92.1 slip through.

So essentially 92.1 has been running the HD-2 format as filler. What is odd is that it effectively gave RO a sixth FM station in the market the past 16 months, following the Cox acquisitions. I guess the FCC allows some flexibility in this situation…not as if the divestiture trust was running a computer-in-a-closet zombie filler format only heard on 92.1.

The current incarnation of Praise on 92.1 was probably always a placeholder since it’s relaunch in May 2021. I don’t think anyone, including RO, expected it to last this long. On air they occasionally reference the end of the format on 92.1 and the HD option, but never give a date. I suspect RO/SST was never really sure when SBS would cough up the final payment and close on the station…sort of a “it will happen when it happens” situation.

SBS will look like complete fools if they fail to meet a contracted closing date for the third time, more than a year after the original target.

Still no sign of yet another amended APA being filed with the FCC, so maybe this long saga finally comes to an end. Sticking with my 55% chance of a new format on 92.1 for Thanksgiving Day.
keep your ayes open. Would anything need to be filed today?
