Maine End of the Zone

I'm surprised he couldn't find a buyer for WKIT which is has been a top-rated station for many years. Then again, I guess Blueberry and Townsquare are both at the limit.

Yikes! What is that creature on the WKIT logo?
I think it's supposed to be a zombie Stephen King:

Given the leanings of the current ownership, hard to see any of these going religious. Perhaps donate 100.3 to Maine Public for their Classical network and a tax break?

What's missing from the articles I've read, is whether or not King is turning in the licences after shutting down. I would hope he would put them up for sale and file an STA until buyers are found.

I remember listening to WZON on break when I was working for Mark Osborne at Lucky 99 in Bar Harbor back in the early '90s. That was when NEB Communications (basically a front for ex-WASY owner Dan Lennon - on paper his wife was the owner) ran the station and WASY alum Big Ange was doing mornings. Fun times, but they didn't last. Nobody could figure out how to run the station profitably in its last four decades on the air.

I'm really saddened by this news. WKIT and WZLO are both great radio stations that I always really enjoyed listening to on my summer trips through Maine.

I remember WZON all the way back to the 80s when King first bought it. The logo had blood dripping off the call letters and the station partnered with one of the Bangor TV stations on weekends to play a few hours of music videos with off-camera DJ Chuck Foster doing radio style talk-ups over the song intros.

Stephen King is such a huge part of Bangor's identity and his stations were really a reflection of the community, the way radio used to be. Huge loss for the market, and really for the whole radio business which loses another one of its last best independent owners.

Every day is just more bad and sad news in the radio biz as we all watch it implode before our eyes.

WKIT should be exhibit #1 when people think that just because a station is #1 in the ratings, that that means anything at all regarding profitability:

I had a listen to this station for the first time yesterday afternoon, though, and it does put the lie somewhat to the idea that a station has to have a narrow and predictable playlist to get anywhere in the ratings. It was a really nice mix of familiar rock and new-to-me stuff that I enjoyed, from through the years. It's a really nice example of a station that knows its market.

Yeah, I was looking at their playlist last night and found some new to me artists I'd never heard of.
