Michael Kay on 880 ESPN

The Athletic and NY Post are reporting there may be a change with Michael Kay and ESPN NY 880:

Kay's contract is up at the end of the year.

ESPN is said to have a desire to keep Kay with the station and in the drive-time slot — a time period generally considered to be between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the afternoon by the radio industry — however, there hasn’t been a “concrete offer” made to him, the report stated.

Kay, the star of the program that also featured Don La Greca and Peter Rosenberg in its most successful recent stage, is not leaving the airwaves entirely; Kay will become a solo act from 1-3 p.m. ET on ESPN New York, which is streamed on its own app and can be found on 880 AM in New York.

In the afternoons, La Greca and Rosenberg are expected to stay and be joined by former newspaperman turned longtime TV and radio personality, Alan Hahn, though no deals are yet signed.

Follow-up on the above Michael Kay story.

My take on it is that doing afternoons has sometimes caused logistical problems for Kay's other job with the NY Yankees. Moving his radio show to mid-days would eliminate that problem for him. The mid-day show is also shorter.

I think it’s all about money. They don’t want to pay him enough and he would rather spend time with his kids. The Yankee deal seems to be a non issue. He does his pregame duties at 6:30. I think he would like more time in between. He’s hinted on air about retiring a lot. This is probably a compromise.

As I said, the new show is shorter, so it's less time commitment. Less time for less money. But there were nights when it was tight getting to the stadium, or collaborating with the other hosts from remote locations. The radio show meant he couldn't chat with the players during warm-ups and batting practice. The 2 hour show will be easier.

I think he also wanted to work from home more and have that flexibility. The weird thing about the Yankee radio contract is that WFAN blocked him from being in the stadium so he was in a trailer outside the stadium.

That's correct, and he also talked about that on his show.

I’ve mentioned he’s their only bright spot. But rethinking it I think he might be boring by himself

A twist to the 10am-1pm program:

It was speculated by TheAthletic that Dan Graca would be joining Bart Scott for those hours.
But the 12/18/2024 ESPN press release states that Chris Carlin will be returning to the local side as he will host with Bart from 10-1.
(Chris had been part of the "Carlin vs. Joe" national program heard on 1050 AM from Noon-3pm.)

Graca will stay in his current (evening) time period.
