Birmingham W222BK 92.3 Birmingham

W222BK files resumption of operations today, presumably rebroadcasting WPYA HD2 (Birmingham Mountain Radio). W222BK was scheduled to be sold with WENN-AM but no idea if that is still ongoing or not.

I listened to WENN this morning and an ID aired of "W222BK Birmingham" so this would appear to indicate the translator is rebroadcasting WENN rather than WPYA HD2. I cannot hear the translator here in south Shelby county as it only broadcasts with 10 watts; I normally receive WLWI-FM out of Montgomery on 92.3 FM.

The station also has a website now at beautifulmusic.us. The direct link to the online broadcast is WENN-AM - Lightning Stream Player

Ah Ha, Josh Bohn, broadcast engineer and station owner is behind the website and likely behind the Beautiful music on WENN if hes registered the site.

I think between the resumption of operations and them mentioning it on 1320, that's good enough for me to assume it's actually relaying WENN now.

I've been listening to the stream for a little while. At first I wasn't impressed because a few of the songs sounded like cheap "electronic orchestra" reproductions of old standards — as evidenced by the fact I couldn't get my phone to detect what the songs were — but after a while some more authentic music played and it was enjoyable to listen. Down here on the coast we have 1480 WABF which is formatted similar, albeit more locally focused and with a wider playlist.

It was nice of the new owners to dig up Casey Kasem for the promos and liners. I can't quite tell if it is carefully cut-together actual audio of him or some AI reproduction. Maybe I'll get lucky and hear him do a long distance dedication for a little dog named Snuggles.

That isn’t actually Casey Kasem, it sounds like AI/computer generated to sound like him though.

I will be headed to Hoover tomorrow and be within the W222BK coverage area so I will check out 92.3 while I'm in the area. I'll report back what I find.

I drove through the coverage area for W222BK today. I can confirm the FM translator is rebroadcasting WENN's beautiful music format. Not much of a signal as the FM broadcasts with 10 watts.

I drove up Hwy 31 and began hearing W222BK around Baptist Shelby Hospital with a fair signal. Hesding north, the signal was choppy until smoothing out once I made it to Pelham.

Setting aside the legalities of using an AI voice, Casey is forever linked to pop music of the 1970s and 1980s, not this type of music.

We enjoyed the station driving thru downtown Birmingham to look at the various Christmas lights.. Listened off the internet and put my phone on the dash. Sounded like the dash speaker in my first car. My car radio doesn't work so I couldn't check 1320.

Are they really broadcasting from the Oak Mountain site? I'm only about one mile from them and get only a weak signal on a decent car radio. I know it's them because I've matched it to the AM and on-line stream but I'm just thinking I should be getting a better signal from them where I'm at in Riverchase.
