Indianapolis How is that 1070 Signal These Days?

I saw that they are using 180 watts on a rooftop mounted emergency antenna system. Is it listenable? I live in Cincinnati, so I haven't been up to Indy lately to try it myself.

South side of Indy the signal is good for 180 watts. North side , not so. Inaudible at night north of I465. Southwest at the Airport, good 24/7.

I live just off the I-65 and Southport Road exit on the south side of Indianapolis. I get their signal reliably both day and night with their signal being in the middle of the signal strength meter (5/10). I am surprised that I am able to pick it up inside my apartment on the first floor.

I guess this is just a way to keep from losing the license? Keep 1070 alive with just 180 watts?

Let's remember this station had been 50,000 watts days and 10,000 watts nights. But it had a complicated, six-tower, directional antenna. AM 1070 is a clear channel frequency for KNX Los Angeles and CBA Moncton, New Brunswick. CBA moved to FM but the frequency still must be protected in Canada.

The land the towers stood on was worth more than the station. So the ESPN sports format continues on two FM translators fed by 93.1 WIBC-HD2. I suppose most listeners are tuned into 93.5 and 107.5, the frequencies of the translators.

I don't think anyone wants 1070 AM, unless Emmis thinks it can be sold to someone, a religious or ethnic broadcaster? But with no FM translator, and a limited signal without its multi-tower array, why would anyone want it?

WFNI just filed an application for another six-month extension to their STA to use the temporary rooftop antenna. They claim "Emmis has identified a prospective purchaser of WFNI, whose efforts to explore options for a viable new permanent site for the station are continuing."

I think Brian Walsh may still want it. He's the owner of WIOE and a couple of other stations in Northeast Indiana. Apparently he had some land in his family and a plan to rebuild the six-tower directional on it, the zoning board in Zionsville said "are you kidding"? I don't know what, if any other options are available.

The current signal still gets into Bob Hawkins' SDR in Edinburgh, IN like gangbusters during the day but is covered at night.

Where it's legal, do the Sport Betting folks "pay" for their programming? Would they pay like the Preachers? If you looking for "inside info" for a bet, AM's fidelity issues should not be an issue. I know a person* who turns off his virus protection and goes to some really shady sites. He actually wins enough to buy a new computer every month or two* and makes his house and car payments. He also pays a local tax guy to file the "gambling form" for the IRS. I get there could be a moral issue but if you allow vape and beer commercials what's the difference?

*He gave me one of his computers. I put a new drive in it and made it a Linux machine.

The sports betting apps spend a lot of money, they are all over TV and radio, even without a sports betting format. I gather without really listening to any sports betting that it's a sports talk show with emphasis on the odds. I don't know if the betting apps buy whole blocks of time, there are those more qualified than me to address that. It is legal in Indiana.

I think the FCC would give Emmis a countless number of STA extensions until a viable CP is submitted. You may not like any new format, but no one (especially the FCC) wants to see the 1070 license surrendered.

I would imagine any 1070 sale would be contingent on an "acceptable signal adjustment". Meaning, the onus is on Emmis to find a new tower site (or diplex off an existing tower) that would satisfy a buyer (Walsh, or somebody else). I would expect if 1070 does come back, it will be at less than 50KW daytime and far less at night (without the previous 4 and 6 respective tower directional arrays).

At last word, Brian was still trying to find a site where he could operate 1070. Not the easiest task in 2024.

The nighttime pattern was directional southeast. With all the other 1070s (and adjacents) a similar pattern would have to be employed. The problem is, the area northwest of Indianapolis along Interstate 55 is booming. That's why Emmis bit on the offer to sell the 1070 tower site, which is now apartments – and the old WIBC billboard. I-55 runs northwest toward Chicago. You could probably find farmland northwest of Lebanon, but that's 28 miles from downtown to downtown, about twice what the old tower site was. Would it be worth the effort? (And there's some development out there as well.)
