AM Frequency of the Week: 660

Carmichael, CA

Daytime: Splatter from KSTE Sacramento, CA
Nighttime: KTNN Window Rock, AZ

Vallejo, CA

Daytime: Splatter from KSTE Sacramento, CA
Nighttime: KTNN Window Rock, AZ

It can be WFAN from NYC any time of the day or night, varying levels. Their signal is usually better than 'WCBS' 880, which shares the tower.

A very early-on catch here in NEPA had to be on the mid-Winter Anomaly / Daytime skip. IIrc, about 2-3 PM. No sign of WFAN whatsoever. Instead there was a faint but very steady signal from WESC in South Carolina and its country music. That can certainly be considered one of those stations that decides for some reason to hop aboard and ride the ridges and arc of the Appalachians. I've gotten maybe a half-dozen such gems, here and back in Queens, from both direcitons (SW and NE) along that arc of the Appalachian/Catskill/Green Mountain viaduct.

13 Decembers back -- wow; that LONG ago already? -- 'WAMO 100' from Pittsburgh was hounding WFAN one afternoon.

East Tennessee: Days-Nada
Sunrise/sunset: WESC Greenville SC
Nights: WFAN

Retro/other: Ohio. WXIC, Waverly makes it into Dayton and even Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Denver, CO - AM HD splatter from local 670 KLTT.

Historical, in central Missouri - KCRO Omaha, NE and KSKY Dallas near sunset; XERPM Mexico City one evening in October 1981.

When I lived in Kansas City, KCRO was quite receivable in the daytime.

WXIC has a moderate signal daytime in suburban Columbus. Probably 4 on a scale of 1-to-10 mostly because of poorer ground conductivity the farther south you get from central Ohio, but still very listenable.
When it goes away at sunset, a solid WFAN takes right over.

DFW, Texas

24/7 is local conservative talker KSKY. In a slight null of KSKY, I sometimes heard XEFZ Monterrey, NL, although I haven't tried in a couple of years.
DX/Retro: Caught KSKY off the air one night in December 2021 and was able to log KTNN Window Rock, AZ, XEDTL Mexico DF, and WFAN NYC.

Here in Wood Dale, IL in the near NW suburb of Chicago:

Daytime: nothing but splash from WSCR which is just 5 miles away from my location
Nighttime: WFAN

DX/RETRO: the following DX heard on this frequency in the past: KSKY (Balch Springs, TX), KTNN (Window Rock, AZ) with their unique programming, WVAL (Sauk Rapids, MN), WESC (Greenville, SC) and the following foreign catches CMEB (Santa Clara, Cuba), XERPM (Mexico City), XECPR (Felipe Carrillo, Mexico), HRNN (La Ceiba, Honduras), YNALN (Esteli, Nicaragua). The most recent catches on this frequency are WLOY (Rural Retreat, VA) and WXIC Waverly, OH) in 2022. Two additional Mexican stations received in 2022: XEDTL (Mexico City) and XEEY (Aguascalientes). This makes a total of 4 Mexican stations received here in Chicago area on 660 kHz.

West side of Houston TX

Days, splatter from local KIKK 650 and weak KSKY from DFW
Sunset and night, strong XEFZ (ABC Deportes, plays music as well) from Monterrey and XEDTL in Mexico City (last I checked playing tropical music, salsa etc) with KSKY in there as well. I've also heard KTNN a few times with country music but not recently. I've never heard WFAN here.

Retro, from Tulsa OK in the early 70's, KSKY was daytime-only with religion. At night it was all XERPM Mexico City w/top 40 music. WNBC was occasionally heard, especially on Monday mornings (IIRC) when XERPM was off.

From NW San Antonio:

Day: It's a weak but readable KSKY if I'm listening on a sensitive radio away from electrical noise. XEFZ in Monterrey can be heard bubbling underneath.

Sunset: Both KSKY and XEFZ are stronger. XEDTL "Tropicalísima" in Mexico City mixes in as well and sometimes dominates.

Night: KSKY is most dominant, but XEEY "La Kaliente" in Aguascalientes and XEDTL mix in at times and occasionally take over. XEFZ is still heard at times but less often than the others. Aiming NW, I sometimes hear KTNN in Window Rock, AZ; also, XECPR "Radio Chan Santa Cruz" in Felipe Carrillo Puerto will occasionally come up. Some nights I wonder if KTNN forgot to switch to its directional pattern because there are nights when it booms in and nights when it's weak or compeletely absent.

Sunrise: XEDTL and XEFZ are stronger and steadier when they go to day power. KTNN is heard even more consistently at sunrise than at night.

Clifton, New Jersey

Days/Nights: I get my local all-sports station WFAN New York, NY with a strong signal. It is also broadcast on 101.9 FM, except for conflicting play-by-play games.

Retro: It was best known as WNBC from 1946 until 1954, and again from 1960 until 1988. Other history includes WEAF (1922–1946), WRCA (1954-1960) and WFAN (1988-present).

North Iowa:
An OK WBHR/Sauk Rapids days. Nights, not exactly sure.

Central Kansas:
A weak KCRO/Omaha days. Nights, not exactly sure - I haven’t done a nighttime AM scan in a long time. Hoping to do that soon.

Used to hear KCRO in Manhattan and Topeka in the 1990s.

KSKY comes in okay here in Austin during the day. Not great, but average to below average.
Sunrise: XEDTL and XEFZ are stronger and steadier when they go to day power. KTNN is heard even more consistently at sunrise than at night.
Same here. KTNN does better than KSKY, especially just before and during sunrise.
KTNN is a much more interesting station anyway.

From the southwest suburbs of Chicago ...

Only one facility in all these years: WNBC / WFAN New York. Local 670 has always been hard to take out for anything but NYC, and when it's off, I DX 670.

From the southwest suburbs of Chicago, a surprise: KTNN Window Rock, Ariz., under and occasionally over WFAN with its mixture of country music and native American chants. Likely on day pattern. First noted in my car at about 12:30 a.m. Fri 2/7/2025. So finally two stations heard on 660. (Excellent conditions tonight based on how Radio Enciclopedia is booming in on 530.)

In NW Washington, it's Country KAPS Mount Vernon, WA. Strange nighttime antenna, I hear it's the only one of it's kind left. It was to protect the Calgary 660 from any interference.
