AM Frequency of the Week: 670

East Tennessee: Days-nada Night: WSCR and/or Cuba's Radio Rebelde chorus.

Retro/other: I formerly had a local in WMTY, Farragut, TN, which carried the True Oldies Channel, simulcast with 98.3 in Sweetwater, except Sundays , when 98.3 ran (and still runs) religion all day. WMTY went silent 12/20/2014, as did WKVL, 850, Knoxville when the towers site both shared was sold.

Denver, CO - 670 KLTT Commerce City, CO, which is just a few miles from me. Preaching in AM HD, a Crawford station. Pretty much destroys anything between 660 and 680 and even suppresses some reception of 650 and 690 due to the HD sidebands.

Retro - given that I lived in Chicago for a couple of years, what was WMAQ, in my time a great all-news station that was killed off in the CBS-Westinghouse merger.

Tyler, TX:

Daytime is a very weak signal from the daytimer in Glenwood, Arkansas, KHGZ. Sports format the last time I paid any real attention to it. Pretty tough to hear it with K-SKY next door at 660.

Nighttime is WSCR Chicago.

Pickerington, Ohio:
Daytime, a very weak WSCR on the better radios and nothing on, well, less better radios.
Nighttime, it all depends on the Havana 670. Sometimes WSCR comes in very well, as it should given that I'm 300 miles from Chicago. Other nights, the Cuban wrecks it. I've wished for that station to go away more times than I can count, or at least direct its signal away from the US.
I don't think I ever grabbed WSCR in Houston. I figured I was 100-200 miles too far south.

In the days, 'WLUI' from Lewistown**, near center-PA State College, puts a readable signal here. They're a daytimer, omni. I first logged them when they were WIEZ. Reportedly, as their original license they were on 1490 as WMRF since the 1940's, and moved to 670 in the late '80's -- as a daytimer.
Some DX instinct itch tells me that their current/listed Oldies format as 'Big Lewie' is a bit too empty a parade to last long on an AM dial no matter how melodic. But Big Lewie, at 5400 watts and omni, might stand out -- actual music amid all the yak -- for some SRS or SSS scouts.

WMAQ logged here easily, shortly after me unpacking from Queens NYC. (Lol -- I'm too used to 'WSCR' being a Scranton station, I don't care how dark they are or how much ivy, weeds or Sheetz'es cover their old 1320 building.)
Good ol' Radio Rebelde has been given a big, logged 'dot' in the logbook. Amazing; like barking dogs, some things never change even over 60 years. Reminds me of Brando's line in 'The Wild Ones': "What are you rebelling against, Johnny?", he answers "Whaddaya got?"
Rebelde was even a dot in the Queens NYC logbook..

If the daytime racket ever abates here, Claremont VA and Miami might be receivable. And -- dream on, Green -- maybe a 670 test from ID or NV. Those were two of the four states I never heard back in Queens.

** LewisBURG, home of the prison, is along the Susquehanna.

DFW, Texas

Daytime is spillover from local adjacent 660-KSKY. Nighttime is a strong WSCR Chicago sports with a little less adjacent channel interference. Under WSCR I have heard Radio Rebelde. Only other logging on 670 has been KHGZ Glenwood, AR around sunset with classic country.

Per MWList, there are 13 Rebelde outlets on 670, and they are there to block reception of WWFE, Miami across the island. Sometimes several will echo, especially on auroral nights

Some nights they totally trash the frequency. I figured they blocked that Miami station but it's a shame they take out WSCR in a large swath of the country where it would otherwise be heard quite well. Not every night, mind you, but certainly too many.
Even in northern Ohio, WSCR comes in much better at night in my experience.

Days, nothing, maybe a little slop from 680 KKYX over in San Antonio
Sunset, WSCR and Radio Rebelde start to come in. I've also heard KHGZ Glenwood AR a few times. Oddly MWLIST shows KHGZ as inactive but FCC still shows them active. Radioinsight says they were sold out of bankruptcy in May 2024.
Night, WSCR and Rebelde. Either can be the strongest depending on conditions.
Sunrise, WSCR and Rebelde start to fade. I've heard KHGZ and KLTT from Commerce City CO as well

My logbook includes a reception of Radio Progreso from Cuba on 670 back in 2021, //640 etc. mixing w/Rebelde. However, I don't see Progreso on 670 listed anywhere. I know there's a lot of uncertainty about data on Cuban stations, so not sure what happened. I suppose it could be a typo in my logbook... Anyone know if there was/is a Progreso outlet on 670?

I logged R. Progreso on 670 on March 2, 2021. It was mixing with Rebelde and I heard (and recorded) an ID.

Like you I’ve seached but have never been able to find any listing that shows a R. Progreso on 670.

Occasionally some local outlets may switch networks if there's a technical difficulty on the local transmitter of another network. From folks' observations only.

I checked 670 earlier this evening, @wildthangjim. KHGZ is on the air, but @TXPH97 is a little behind in his report. It is a Fox Sports affiliate now, branded as "Fox Sports 98.9 and 107.9". Still really tough to hear next to K-SKY, but it's very much active.

Caddo Country went off the air late last year, E-Radio from Greenville purchased it silent this last May, and did to it what they did to their hometown KGVL. Dumped the music for Fox Sports. I would imagine something similar happened down in Toledo Bend, when E-Radio took control of the Pineland FM. I'm not sure if @WCJ would be able to hear KFAH all the way down in Orange, but maybe he'll see this and give it a try.

Boise Idaho
Day & Night KBOI. Night 82 mV/m signal.
SS & SR KMZQ in there (and when they frequently stay on day power antennas all night)
Night KBOI, in null a bit of KLTT and Cuba.

Nothing but slop from an Air 1 station on 98.9. Have never gotten a call sign, only ID as Air 1

Here in Wood Dale, IL in the near NW suburb of Chicago:

Daytime & Nighttime: WSCR with their blowtorch right in my backyard just 5 miles away from my location. Soon they will be moving to a new location farther away (8 miles), but it won't make any difference.

DX/RETRO: Any DX is on 670 at my location is possible only if WSCR goes off. These days WSCR rarely goes off the air. In the past caught them off few times during the WMAQ days. In 2019 we had several chances to hear something new since WSCR went off several times while work was being done on the WSCR/WBBM antenna diplex. Unfortunately nothing new was heard by me. Only Radio Rebelde from Cuba, and WWFE (Miami, FL) , but those were relogs. Back on March 10, 2012 WSCR went off air with advance notice and a DX test was arranged with KBOI (Boise, Idaho) to run Morse Code IDs during the WSCR silent period using their non-directional pattern. However the conditions on that day were extremely poor. I thought I heard some beeps while listening, but nothing that would be enough for an actual ID. Besides Cuba and WWFE the only other station heard during one of the silent periods was KHGZ (Glenwood, AR).
