Rickey Henderson -- Baseball icon

This will likely change as time goes on, but as of 3 PM PST, no major news or sports sources are reporting his death, other than west coast media and a couple of NYC tabloids. Nothing from CBS, ESPN, the AP, MLB, or the A's themselves.

From the San Jose Mercury News article that tbolt909 linked to:

After a frenzy of social media speculation overnight, multiple sources confirmed to the Bay Area News Group on Saturday morning that Henderson had died. The family is expected to make an announcement later in the day. Henderson had been in the hospital battling pneumonia, a source told the Bay Area News Group.

Apparently, those sources aren't yet good enough to verify this story. If it is true, R.I.P. Ricky.

I didn't see any confirmation from his family until your second link. Now the national media is running with it.

Henderson had the habit of referring to himself in the third person. He could be hilarious in interviews.
I recall one time in Oakland he was being asked about facing pitcher Al Leiter. He said something like---
"That man has broken many of Rickey's bats with his curveball, but Rickey is ready today".

He truly enjoyed the game and was a pitchers nightmare. If you walked him, that usually was the same as a Double or Triple. The game was better when he played. Now , it's all Home Runs and Strikeouts. Henderson brought gamesmanship and flair, not to mention scoring runs at a mind blowing clip...
