KOFI 1180 Off Air

KOFI's transmitter site burnt to the ground early this morning and is a total loss. No idea how long they'll be off but I suspect at least a few days. As far as I know, towers still stand but the shack of equipment is just crispy shards of nothing now.

Have you heard KERN Bakersfield up there? Might be a good shot to get them. Also Rebelde in Cuba.

Cuba's radio infrsatructure has been trashed ..SW is gone, AM is hit or miss

And i might have heard KERN before....i heard KOFI just a few nights ago

They'll be back on sometime today with 30 watts.

This is what the insides of the shack look like now.

They will be on the 30 watt transmitter for about the next 6 to 8 weeks until a brand new 1KW transmitter comes in.

It'll be Summer 2025 before they're back up to 50kw.

Back east here in PA (and back in Queens NYC) I've had some pretty good luck on 1180 even with our Eastern roadhog WHAM. They're usually a ton of beer barrels at night, but being a little up there in latitude they are often rendered feeble at SRS and SSS; a little sluggish establishing their presence at times.
There's a spray of omnis up and down the Mississippi -- 'W's -- that may be of interest to you folks in MDT. And we all know about those how those high school winter sports broadcasts (no doubt the provincialism in the air) tend to reach a bit further than the local arenas.
Best of DX to yiz!

KOFI has ramped it up to 1kw full time as of Friday night Dec 20th. They had been running 30 watts since a fire destroyed their entire transmitter shack, but the tower and antenna tuning unit survived.

It'll be late spring/early fall before they're back up to 50kw. The 30 watt signal was heard in the Seattle area and I think somewhere in southern Alberta.

I haven't done much AM DXing since I moved to ID, but KERN makes it like a ton of bricks at night to Cascade/McCall as well. If I hadn't have taken down my homemade 3-ft. loop, perhaps I could have pulled WHAM Rochester out with KOFI on very low power. Or even the Omaha station at sunrise.
