Netflix Christmas NFL Viewership

Netflix spent $150 million for the rights to broadcast two NFL games on Christmas day. Preliminary numbers indicate about a third of their subscribers watched. That could mean as many as 94 million people worldwide. After the games, Netflix reported they were viewed in 200 countries.

Back in 1990 or 1991 (can't remember the exact year) a friend's dad's business had season tickets to the Hawks. We were luck enough to get to use them once. These seats were 1 row back from the visitor's bench. I have never seen big men move that fast in my life. TV will never capture the athletic abilities of NBA players.

It's a one-off scheduling day for the NFL...what's the typical viewing on a Thursday Night on Amazon Prime?

No way those events can be compared. I read the second game was a snoozer; lot of views faded away during that game, certainly.

Nielsen reports the NBA on ESPN was up 84% over last year, with an average of 5.25 million viewers per game:

Christmas Day 2025 falls on a Thursday -- Amazon Prime's football night. I'm willing to bet that they'll air at least one, if not two, games on that day.

Meanwhile over at ABC, LeBron James said, "I love the NFL, but Christmas is our day."

Basketball: The reason for the season. SMH. Is this the prevalent attitude among NBA players? Do they get a big bonus for playing on Christmas? You'd think that there'd be a good number of players who would rather have both Christmas Eve and Day off. Do they just not speak out? Would they risk a fine for doing so?

The NHL traditionally played on Christmas until the players association got that killed off. They played on the 26th (Boxing Day) until another negotiation cleared that slate. So hockey players get a three-day Christmas holiday, but play on New Year's Eve (the new Winter Classic date) and New Year's Day.

If would be far more difficult for the NBAPA to get that deal given how tied into network contracts the Christmas Day games are.

Netflix has the rights. TNF gets bumped that night.
According to CBS News: "The NFL will have at least two games on Dec. 25 in 2025 and '26, with Netflix slated to have at least one each year. Amazon Prime Video will have a night game with Christmas falling on a Thursday next year."

So Christmas 2025 will be the first day with two streamers carrying an NFL game. Netflix at least one in the afternoon, and Amazon at night. Let's see how well that goes over.

With football fans who don't give a crap about Netflix's and Amazon Prime's other offerings, this won't go over well. But I'm sure the $$$ both services are paying the NFL give the league millions of reasons to give the big middle finger to those fans and their retro preferences. At what point, though, do grandstanding US Congressmen start getting involved?

The Genie is out of the bottle. Old demos or grumpy Congressmen can moan & whine all they want. This is the new business model. One day, all the games might be pay per view...

NFL ordered to pay $4.7B in 'Sunday Ticket' case

Are you referring to this lawsuit? The NFL used to have a Blackout Rule. Games that weren't sold out weren't televised in the local market. Things change. I don't think there is anything illegal about the NFL moving all their games to cable or some other pay per view platform one day...
I believe the NFL is required to air its games in the two teams' local markets via broadcast TV. For example, tonight's Amazon Prime game between the Seahawks and the Bears will air on the Fox stations in Seattle (KCPQ/13) and Chicago (WFLD/32). They came up with the best offer for each city, but any Seattle and Chicago station could have bid on the game if they wanted to.

The NFL does this for ESPN games also. They air on free local channels ONLY in the 2 markets that are playing. I'm not sure they are required to do this. It may be as a courtesy. A few crumbs to show how magnanimous the league is...
