Atlanta Ratings Dec 24 - 96.1 big increase

25-54: 1. WALR 2. WVEE 3. WAMJ 4. WSB-A 5. WRDG 6. WHTA 9. WFSH
18-34: 1. WVEE 2. WFSH 3T. WSB & WALR 5. WHTA 6. WSRV
18-49: 1. WALR 2. WVEE 3. WAMJ 4. WRDG 5. WSB-A 6. WHTA 7. WFSH

The new PD seems to be paying off for 96.1. Top 5 18-49 and 25-54. Don’t remember the last time they were that high.

They have never been that high before, but not sure the new PD has anything to do with it.

What do you think the reason is? I live in Charlotte so I don’t listen to the station on a regular basis, but I don’t think the station going from a bottom feeder to top 5 in major demos is just a coincidence. Especially 2 months after a new PD is hired.

Your point is well taken. I listen to them only on a cursory basis, but they sound the same to me as they’ve sounded since the frequency swap. Maybe it just took a while to get awareness. Also, Urban’s share (including WPZE) increased from 28.7 in November to 33.1 in December. (Where did those listeners come from?)

That said, I’m not the best person to answer this. If Shawty Black sees this, hopefully he’ll comment. He knows the intricacies much better than I do.

It could be a panel change or weighting issue. I noticed all of the urbans were near the top. I know that Charlamagne interview with Kamala Harris got a lot of attention. That could have driven people to the station as well. Who knows? I’m just glad Hot has some competition. Never been a fan. Hopefully 96.1 will stay competitive.

96.1 THE BEAT

Finally we see some upward trends. Hopefully they can stay steady in an over saturated Urban market.

When did The Beat get a new PD? Dj Louie Vee has been the PD since Summer of 2020. Did I miss a press release saying he was out?

Things to take into consideration:

• 96.1 The Beat was the official station for the Atlanta version of iHeart Jingle Ball. Atlanta was the only city that had a Hip Hop lineup vs the nationwide lineup along with the only city that an Urban station host Jingle Ball. The fact that they didn’t give POWER 105.3 hosting rights is another indication that POWER is just to have an iHM CHR in town for national buys.

• Afternoons have been hosted locally by Ferrari Simmons a little over a year ago and most recently added co host BT. Both have been heard on the competing urban stations in the past. Both also host a nationally know podcast called The Baller Alert Show.

• Music wise, there has been an obvious shift. Lots of “Throwback” songs are now heard more frequently especially those on the R&B side. This change, maybe the draw that was needed perhaps…. However, will it be enough?

• Mornings, Middays and some parts of the weekends are still syndicated/voicetracked. While many of the competing stations have mornings syndicated, the rest of the day parts are local. IMO any major market station that voice tracks/syndicate day parts outside of mornings is already a nail in the coffin, especially when there is competing stations in the same format.

OG 97.9… is anybody home??

Cumulus, now is the time to do something with 97.9. Clearly, Atlanta is an Urban market but it seems they don’t want a taste of the pie.

The music is stale! It’s the same “Throwbacks and Classic Hip Hop” songs over and over. Nothing about the format is unique to Atlanta. With so much Hip Hop and R&B produced locally and songs from the early 2000s, it’s the missing piece to the pie along with some former jocks from V and HOT. Could that “perhaps” give Q99.7 a move up while swinging listeners from MAJIC, KISS and V???

OG 97.9 survived the market when initially BOOM 102.9 and Old School 99.3 (then became 87.7) were both in the “Throwback Hip Hop” arena. However, nothing has sparked!

I believe DJ Loui Vee is still the day-to-day PD of The Beat. What was being referred to in prior posts is that last September, Jill Strada joined as SVP Programming for the entire Atlanta cluster.

Jill Strada is the new SVP of Atlanta Programming. Not sure how iHeart is structured. Maybe she’s above the PDs. Louie Vee is still listed as the PD on Mediabase.

It’s probably the music changes that are driving the increase. The R&B heavy format worked well for V103, and they used to dominate all the major demos. Explains the increase in 25-54 vs 18-34.

I don’t think it matters if a couple of the dayparts are national voicetracks. As long as there is some local presence. WPEG here in Charlotte is voicetracked or jockless outside of AM drive, and they’re usually #1 in the demos. There are exceptions, but I don’t listen to radio for the jocks, I listen for the music.
