North Phoenix 91.9 FM KRKY

I am hearing KRKY on 91.9. Looks like they bought the old Family Radio translator at 88.9 and moved it to 91.9 also increasing power from 10 watts to 54 with directional signal to the northeast.

But 88.9 is still broadcasting Family Radio. The 91.9 also is transmitting RDS information. This will block the new Desert Soul Media station KRPJ when it does come on the air.

There is also two new LPFM applications proposing to operate on 91.9 mhz near downtown Phoenix, both accepted for filing by the FCC. School of HipHop PHX, and Nothing is Greater Than Love Foundation are the two applicants. So it is going to be busy on 91.9 in the future.

I used to listen KRKY all the time up in Cave Creek, are they still playing the mix of country and light pop? And any chance of hearing the station in the east valley?

For those out of the range of "K-Rocky":

Listen Live:

"Where to listen" (not updated; currently lists 90.7 K214DN for Northern Phoenix)

And in the same 'Where to Listen' web site, they reference 88.7 KFCY for Albuquerque. No such call letters, and the frequency does not match an Albuquerque frequency. So not that one either.

That's now KEZF 91.1 (Grants, NM).

Stumbled upon 91.9 K220FM in North Phoenix. The KRKY site says the station plays "a mix of classic rock, folk, and country music from four decades." In essence it is a series of 60-minute DJ-less commercial-free playlists of AC gold from the likes of Genesis, Hall & Oates, Jewel, The Eagles, Boston, and so on. KRKY's "Where to Listen" page seems up to date.

The TOH ID just lists the mother station and all its translators - I only recalled the Grants COL. Very confusing concept for a non-comm frequency... as if this town needed more extremely commercial oldies music?!

As I mentioned in another thread about this recently, it's a placeholder. The owner flips non-comms and translators and uses KRKY-FM as filler programming on them. It doesn't exist to serve an audience, but rather to just have something on the air.

What I've never heard on KRKY, though I've listened to it over the Internet many times and a few times through its now-defunct 90.7 translator, is any music by African-american artists. Not Diana Ross or Charley Pride or even Michael Jackson, all of whom have had recordings that could very easily have fit into this format.

Please don't try to introduce racism into a filler format obviously created by the owner to his own taste. This is just a filer format... as Lance said, a "placeholder".

I tuned into the 91.9 translator this evening--it has an excellent signal at my north Phoenix residence. I listened for about two hours, and it sounds like the main signal has dropped the country songs on its playlist and is going with classic hits from the late 60s ("These Eyes," by the Guess Who) to around 2010 ("All Summer Long," by Kid Rock). Most of the music was from about the mid-70s until the mid-80s and ranged anywhere from Bread's "Guitar Man," (1972) to Phil Collins' "Sussudio," (1986).

Despite objections raised by both a staff member and another poster and even though it's a filler format, I stand my ground on the skin color of the artists being played.

Give the accusation of racism a break. This is a guy who deals licenses who is putting his own favorite music on the signals in the meantime.

I don’t have any songs by any of the three artists you mention on my personal playlists, either. That just means I don’t want to hear any of their songs anymore. It does not mean I am racist,

Accusing a person of racism with no real grounds is ugly.

youve offered zero proof or evidence to back up your claims

are you going to say a country station is racist for not playing any black artists? As I recall, theres a few, but not many.. but using your logic, the country stations are racist

At my current station in Alaska we dont play a ton of motown, despite our wide variety when we play music.. simply because my listeners like old classic rock n roll type stuff and country

For the record, I didn't accuse the station owner of racism. I do not know him personally and he has never made any public statements that would make me believe that.

Radio stations aren't racist; people are. That said, I never accused the owner of being a racist; that was an assumption made by others.

Since the station you operate serves the wider community and not your personal preferences, I have no bones to pick with you. The same applys to commercial country outlets where the stations (presumably) serve their local markets and not the whims of their owners. (By the way, unless modern country stations are no longer playing him, country music star Darius Rucker is African-american.)

You said the same thing in different words: by not playing certain black artists the station format appeared to be racist.

This is the last post we will permit that tries to involve racism with the formation of a music format that is not even intended to attract audience, but, rather, to sustain a license for other purposes. Any further remarks of this nature will result in post deletion and possible banning

Nothin' like a range war to start the New Year. C'mon guys, take a chill pill and move on. Vic Michaels does this all the time to keep the license in good standing. Can't say the geniuses at KASA 15~Forty did the same.

I was in North Phoenix this evening and decided to listen to this station driving home on the SR 51. I was able to receive it until I got on the Loop 202 at which point it started cutting in and out with a talk station. When I got off the Loop 202 at 40th St and started going North, this station came back.
