I don't think I've ever heard Giles be a fill-in host on Weekend Edition, or the other tentpole shows (Morning Edition or All Things Considered). If he has, it must've happened while I was out of town or in a coma.

Anchors on NPR's "Morning Edition"

No, he's the main anchor.
Notably, when ME had two hosts who were on every day and ATC had 3 who rotated, the fill-ins were typically long time correspondents who had moved into "senior roles" like Linda Wertheimer and Noah Adams.
They also had feature reporters who had written into their contacts that they were main substitutes for the Weekend shows (Jacki Lyden, Lynn Neary, and Cokie Roberts' daughter, Rebecca).
These people were talented and capable guest hosts, but in the case of the semi-retired had no interest in further daily hosting or in the case of the feature reporters, weren't considered to be candidates for a full time host role.
A larger roster of rotating anchors + using younger reporters with potential as fill-ins gives NPR a much deeper bench for succession planning.
News anchor and program host are two completely different jobs in NPR-land.
They treat the newscasts at the top and bottom of the hour as though they are separate network newscasts that are not part of the program.
For example, Steve Inskeep is a Morning Edition host. Dave Mattingly is a news anchor.
Dave never hosts Morning Edition. Steve never does top and bottom of the hour newscasts.
Well, the name of the thread is "Anchors on NPR's 'Morning Edition'", not "Hosts on NPR's 'Morning Edition'". So the newscasts are what I assumed were being referred to.

Yeah...it's terminology I had to get used to when I worked at Capital Public Radio in Sacramento (2020-2024), and I see I've used the wrong terms in this thread.
Looking at the original post, it's clear the intent was to discuss hosts.
On Morning Edition, Dave Mattingly and Korva Coleman.
Middays, Lakshmi Singh.
Afternoons (during All Things Considered), it's Jack Speer and/or Dwayne Brown. I believe one of them starts later in the day and goes into the evening. That may rotate between them.
Late nights/overnights, Shay Stevens.
Weekends, Giles Snyder, Jeanine Herbst, Barbara Klein and Nora Raum.
Louise Schiavone and Windsor Johnston are also anchors---I don't know their schedules.
It should be noted that Lakshmi and Korva have filled in on Weekend ATC in the past. Not often, but they have, Lakshmi a handful of times, Korva at least once. (Separately, not as a tag team.)
(Weekend ATC has had some interesting fill-in hosts over the decades. The most memorable to me was one weekend in the mid-Eighties when they paired Terry Gross and Daniel Schorr. She was just about to roll out the national version of Fresh Air, and he was about to join NPR after leaving CNN. I would have loved to be a fly on the wall for that broadcast.)

My favorite in a long list of tosses to break from Tom and Ray Magliozzi (Click and Clack, the Tappet Brothers) on Car Talk:
"And although it makes Daniel Schorr break out in hives every time we say it....this is NPR, National Public Radio."
I remember her being on Saturdays.
They substitute for Giles Snyder.
KQED runs ATC in the 1:00 pm PT hour, as well as 4:30-6:30 most weekdays, so I know Dwayne Brown anchors the 1:30 newscast. Lakshmi's last cast is 1:01, Speer's first cast is 2:01, his last is 7:01. Shay picks up at 8:01. (All times Pacific.)
Lakshmi Singh split mid-days with Korva Coleman for many years with both working weekends as part of their full time jobs.
That ended in 2009 when Carl Cassell retired and Korva Coleman moved to the 5AM weekday newscast + reports for the morning newscasts. Korva took over all the morning newscasts after Paul Brown took a buyout a few years later.
Lakshmi has been full time M-F in the midday slot for 15 years at this point.
Barbara Klein retired last year.
Nora Raum, who took a buyout to retire from her part-time position in 2013 and after sitting out the terms of her buyout, returned as a freelancer, has moved from weekend overnights to weekend day times.
Last year meaning yesterday? Because I'm pretty sure I heard her within the last few weeks.
Windsor Johnston and Louise Schiavone do not have a set schedule. They fill in whenever needed. Louise Schiavone is on duty as I write this, mid-days on the New Year holiday, and Windsor Johnson worked the afternoon shift New Years eve.
I remember that, sorta fondly. I damn near choked on my coffee when Tom said it.
Slightly off topic: Windsor Johnston did a commentary for Morning Edition the Monday before Christmas, describing the holes in people's souls at Christmas when they've recently lost a spouse or other loved one. She went on to describe how she's done newscasts on Christmas Day for 14 years, and how for the first time she was going to do it this year without her own husband. Only after the piece ended did the host (IIRC, Asmah Khalid, filling in) mention that her husband was the late Bob Edwards, ME's original host.
She retired January 2022.
That shows how names and voices can bury themselves in your brain. I was at CapRadio when she retired. I should have remembered that.
I suspect it didn't go well. They ended up hiring Lee Thornton and paired her with David Molpus. Quite a contrast there. Schorr became a regular commentator for NPR. His weekly chats with Scott Simon were legendary.

In July 2017 Nora filled in and many questions in the chat about who she was and if she was new.
At 9:20 she described the terms of the Newscaster buyout that she took along with Paul Brown and Jean Cochrane - she received her full pay as severance for a year and was limited to freelance appearances at NPR for three years after the buyout.
Once that period was up, she was able to freelance as much as she desired. She has subsequently closed her law practice and her husband passed away a few years ago, so it seems like she's doing a lot of work for NPR these days.
