K-Earth Sounds Good Today

Listening at work and I'm hearing variety like Soul Asylum "Runaway Train", Whitesnake "Is This Love?" (thought it was going to be Living On A Prayer then was like, oh wow, something you don't hear often), and Foster The People "Pumped Up Kicks". It's probably because of New Year's but if they had this variety everyday, it would be cool. We don't listen to K-Earth much, even my non radio geek co workers say it's the same stuff everyday like "Take On Me", "Girls Just Want To Have Fun", etc... (I know the answer will be....K Earth makes money having a super tight playlist, etc etc..._) but I'll enjoy it when I can :)
 
Unless they're actively doing some kind of New Year's Eve specialty show I would guess the scheduling gods were in your favor. Those are all staples at Audacy owned Classic Hits outlets these days.

yea normally they don't play lot of these songs during "business hours". Maybe on the weekends but they are considering it a non working day today. First time i'm hearing Radiohead "Creep" as well. Trust me, if you listen to KRTH during the day for a few days, the playlist is VERY predictable
 
Not much of a fan of krth but clearly I am in the minority. Always near the top of if not top of the ratings. But they do play Alphavilles forever young and I love that song. Which is surprising cause it only charted at number 93 in the billboard hot 100 in 1985 but maybe it was a dance hit?

Aside from that most of the time it's burnt out tunes. Can't wait for the all 80s new years eve šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£

Which is why I never listen.

"Girls Just Want to Have Fun" every day? I didnā€™t even put up with that in 1984.

maybe the put "Forever Young" back in rotation because they have a David Guetta/Ava Max remake playing on Top 40 radio?

Hah! I like your sense of humor.

I don't have a problem with the song, or KRTH evolving. It's just a little unusual to me that that music shows up on the stations that generally focus on "feel good" nostalgia. Now, admittedly, some of the themes aren't always happy but the music is generally identified with good times. The "classic hits" station to me is where you tune to relive the good times. Be it the Motown era, or later, disco, new wave, etc.

So to me, it's the difference between hearing say, New Order or the Human League on KRTH versus "Creep" or "Runaway Train" - I'm not saying all the music has positive themes or emotions, but the difference in sonic texture between new wave or classic rock and 90s alternative is so wide, and the general mood of the alt format in those years was alienated, cynical, negative. I say that as a FAN. I love Radiohead and if I tuned by KRTH and heard that song, something about it would just feel...alien.

Maybe their research says otherwise - but as much as I detest some of it personally, I can see more of an argument for 90s pop on KRTH than 90s alt. And I love alternative music.
 
Of course ā€œLast Kissā€ is a remake, which shows that even ā€˜60s oldies were not always ā€œfeel goodā€ songs either. In fact I used to jock at an oldies station. I remember one time playing a sweeper cart, which had several liners stacked onto it. This one proclaimed ā€œYour fun time, feel good radio stationā€, and I played it into the next song on the log which was ā€œAnd When I Dieā€ by Blood, Sweat & Tears. Oops!
 
I'm not so sure it's a complaint, it's just an observation. If it works for KRTH, fine, it's just a different vibe than a lot of people are used to from the "oldies" era or even 80s based stations like KJEB in Seattle. The 90s music was very fragmented, and the mood of alternative rock was distinctively dark.

It's a different world now the younger demos win the radio music playlist battle. Streaming is the way your favorite music is playing all the time no matter the music decade or genre. I'm on Youtube, Spotify and streaming lots of web only stations from all over America. I'm listening to KBEB 92.5 now and hearing an Aerosmith song. Interesting indeed.

That shouldn't surprise you. Chart position is not part of the consideration.

It was featured in "Napoleon Dynamite", which propelled it back into popularity. The Jay-Z interpolation in 2010 helps, too.

I remember back in the 90s, UK radio stations couldn't get enough of playing the cheery-sounding "Not So Manic Now" by Dubstar. Nobody stopped to listen to the lyrics, which were about the rape of a senior citizen:
