WTBS 87.7 flips back to R&B

87.7 THE VIBE

I remember a few years back i made the argument that Southern Soul music was missing from the radio in ATL and here we are. This is a growing audience that is underserved in many markets in the South with the exceptions of Charleston,SC, Memphis, Dothan and Montgomery. The growing trail ride and line dancing culture has exposed the Southern Soul genre to a bigger audience, especially on social media. Hopefully its less R&B and they leave that too KISS and MAJIC.

Wonder if Youngblood would come back to the FM radio dial for Saturday mornings? I expect to hear Jammin Jay mixes back on the radio now.

I think the biggest issue is the frequency. Doesn't matter what they put on there, most people aren't going that low on the dial with the non commercial stations.

I also don't see southern soul working regardless of frequency. Star 99.7 in Charleston has decreased the southern soul spins and titles in the last couple of years. There's a couple of songs that I like, but I'm not really a fan of the format.

To all reading, Southern Soul is hot right now. Many of these singers are played heavy on some of our local radio stations in The Gump, Birmingham, Dothan, Greenville and my neck of the woods. Many of these singers have even performed live. One big promoter of this style is Roscoe "Killer Diller" Miller. He and his Big KD brand is always putting on concerts and they feature these singers. I look for this new station to have success. Say what you will but this style is indeed catching on. I see it gaining more ground. Just my two cents.

It's a matter of "If you build it, they will come". "Me TV-FM" WRME-LD Chicago regularly appears in the top 10 in Chicago. Although they also spend more than any other station on marketing with banners on busses and elsewhere throughout the city.

One other thought @lanceventa, signal and frequency be danged. People will listen, since no one else is doing it in that market. They could careless about the coverage area or where it's located. Just to hear songs they like, is good enough for them.

Seems more like an exception than a rule. I could see maybe a news or talk station working, but I don’t see a music station working on 87.7 in most cases.

The Vibe will never be competitive with such a limited signal as well.

WARR-1520 Warrenton NC has blocks of Southern Soul music when they aren't doing gospel. Also R&B, smooth jazz, etc. Definitely worth a listen.

It’s no secret KISS 104.1 and MAJIC 107.5 will dominate the Urban AC audience. However, the 2 big stations dont even touch Southern Soul. Honestly, CLASSIX 102.9 could have done so already. It just kind of shows how out of touch some corporations are with local and regional genres and trends.

I did some back tracking on social media when then MIX 87.7 signed off and fans were devastated. As of today, some of those channels have be born again under the VIBE branding. Now if we get some familiar names on the air, they may have something!!!

Check out thebigkd.com, from The Gump area and enjoy their mix of R&B, Blues & Southern Soul, brought to you by the legendary Roscoe "Killer Diller" Miller. He plays a good bit of this style on Saturdays and some throughout the week.

Does anyone think the new administration will do anything with the Franken-FMs? I know the FCC is not allowing new ones.

I thought Classix played southern soul? I remember reading an article a couple of years ago and Mitch Faulkner was talking up the format before he died.

Kiss and Majic won’t touch it because there’s not a big enough audience. Show me a top 50 market where it’s successful. I’ll wait….
