Denver New Aurora LPFM CP

Escaping my notice until now, I see that the FCC in December awarded a construction permit to the Aurora African Chamber of Commerce for an LPFM at 105.5 in southeast Aurora. There was a competing application with Denver Community Radio, but the Commission's point system gave the advantage to the Aurora application.

Though the 50-watt station will be in southeast Aurora, there is the potential for interference with KJAC ("The Colorado Sound"), a noncommercial station owned by KUNC out of Greeley. There's reasonably good reception of KJAC in east Denver; the LPFM may interfere with that, as its 50 dBu contour reaches the town of Glendale and the Park Hill neighborhood of Denver. KJAC is mostly a north Front Range station but it does also program to Denver. It will be interesting to see what conflicts, if any, develop. Denver Community Radio likely would have had the same issues from its proposed south Denver location.

The only other LPFM in Denver at present is KETO-LP, on Delmar Circle, also in Aurora. I've easily picked it up (a 100-watter) even west of downtown Denver (Aurora is a few miles east of downtown Denver). It also programs to African communities in Aurora, primarily in the languages of Ethiopia but I've heard French-language programs on KETO as well.

I hope it does not affect listening to KJAC in Littleton when it comes on air.
It probably depends on where you are in Littleton. Theoretical city-grade coverage goes out to Centennial and maybe Englewood. The location is west of the Quincy reservoir and east of I-225.

That said, reception of KJAC outperforms its predicted contours, likely due to terrain. I hope the people at KUNC (KJAC's owner) are aware of this situation. Ultimately their concern may depend on how many listener contributions they get from Denver proper. There's some overlap of audience there with CPR's Indie 102.3. KUNC/KJAC also may not want to be seen as going after a minority-owned outlet, which could lead to negative public perceptions. The effect from the LPFM that I expect at my location near the old Lowry air-force base is increased noise to KJAC, and possibly some capture south of there.

The theoretical coverage indicated that an LPFM could go in there, but, in this case, I think the theoretical coverage understates the actual coverage. This is based on experience, not conjecture.

Terrain certainly enhances KJAC's signal towards the east side of Denver. And,, with some tropospheric ducting KJAC will eat that little LPFM alive.
