Transmitter Maintenance & New Antenna?

It sounds like WZTI is conducting transmitter maintenance earlier this morning. Which is cool, I love seeing the technical adjustments presented in real time over the air - it's so cool.

The station is coming in bursts around 7 AM this morning - some high pitched tones, some lower pitched tones which gave way to Jailhouse Rock by Elvis Presley.

Earlier they were operating in bursts with variable signal strength in and out.

They are back on the air and while taking a listen I noticed they must have a new antenna pattern - it sounds great in West Bend Wisconsin and sounds like a local station.

WZTI's signal has needed help for a LONG time. Their transmitter site is only 25 miles from me, and I should be on the edge of their local signal. They have, however, long been the closest AM station to me that I could barely receive.

I didn't know they were doing transmitter maintenance, but 1290 actually sounded pretty good this afternoon. I am about 7 miles north of the WI/IL border.

I think 1290's patterns are frequently reversed, meaning they're running the night pattern during the day for example some months, then it shifts to normal the next month.

I wonder if their night time pattern is the reason you are unable to get their signal. They have a daytime pattern and a night time pattern. The night time pattern creates a very large null to the north and west (to protect WNAM Oshkosh) that's why some months I can't hear them in west bend and other months I do hear them in westbend. Like Jeremy was saying - the antenna patterns must be reversed.

Perhaps they are finally spending a little money optimizing the signal since The Fonz no longer shows up in the ratings without the two former translators.
