WWDX (Huntingdon, TN)

West Tennessee has had its share of "dark, yet still licensed" stations through the years. WWDX AM 1530 in Huntingdon, TN can be added to the list. Off for months and months, the last time I heard this station on was early last year. Since the station simply simulcasts WEIO FM 100.9 and is daytime-only, not much is missing with it off. WWDX is still mentioned in the FM's hourly station ID, even with it being off for a period of time. Both stations are owned by Freeland Broadcasting Company in Benton, KY, where their stations there are operating loud and clear.

The Freelands are currently changing the ownership structure from the parents to their children. WEIO is not top of mind considering it is located away from Benton KY. I assume they might even be open to an offer for it, although I am not privy to their plans. WWDX would be better off being deleted.

I've noticed a very low volume on WEIO for several months.
I noticed that last week, when flipping around the dial. At first, I thought they had lost a channel. The levels are definitely not right.

I figure Forever would buy it, and do who knows what with it. Or, the new WNWS "Talk N West TN" group out of Jackson, who was looking to expand their coverage area.

WWDX doesn't have an FM translator, and was simply simulcasting WEIO before it went off.

I don't see Forever buying it. Both Kerby Confer and Donald Alt are close to or over 80, and all indications are the stations are being moved to trusts and shuffled around in the families. I believe Forever could be had in Jackson and Murray, but it entails buying all of the small class As in NW TN as well.

Unfortunately, while it's not been talked about publicly hardly at all, Mr. Alt passed away. I understand it was kept quiet per his request. I am only bringing up so someone doesn't potentially make a negative comment about him or his legacy.

Hate to hear this. You're right about secrecy. No obituary, no notice. That explains the trust filings flurry in 2023.

Yes, he was a Legend and worthy of celebrating but if those were his last wishes after a very public life, I understand.

Those trusts filings were more about the breakup of Kerby, Alt and Lynn Deppen's partnership. Kerby's daughter Kristin Cantrell's Seven Mountains Media got half of Forever's PA stations plus Forever South's Bowling Green KY and Burbach's Parkersburg clusters. Deppen got the remainder of Forever Broadcasting's Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Delaware stations (many of which are currently for sale). I forget offhand who ended up with the rest of Forever South.

I think they're still in the Alt Dynasty trust. Christine Hillard is a minority owner. I assume Southern Belle will either file to take control or the Alt Trust will sell them eventually.

I have pieces of their organization on all sides of me here in Tennessee-Murray, Bowling Green and Jackson. Good Broadcasters.

WEIO FM 100.9 ("The Farm") has been off the air for about two weeks. I'm not sure if it's due to recent storms in the area, or not. You can hear a dead carrier if you're a few miles from the transmitter near Carroll Lake. Outside of the immediate area, it's off.

WWDX AM is still off.

WWDX filed a silent STA: "On March 3, 2025, Licensee, Freeland Broadcasting Co., Inc., was made aware that WWDX is off the air due to technical damage at the antenna site. At this time, the road to the antenna is impassable. As such, Licensee requests authority to remain silent for a period of 180 days to allow access the site, determine the nature of the problem, and explore solutions to return the station to licensed operations."

WEIO is way out in the country so i can imagine its studio and transmitter site has some issues

WWDX simply simulcasts WEIO, so there really hasn't been a loss of it being off. However, it's easily been off for six months, maybe a little bit longer. So...they're just now figuring out that it hasn't been on?

WEIO 100.9 FM is back on, but the audio remains at a very low level. In the car, you have to turn the volume all the way up to hear it OK.

The mention of WWDX in the hourly legal ID on WEIO has been removed.

We'll see if anything happens to WWDX by November, when the STA expires.
