What format was on 106.3 right after the move to 107.5?

I asked ChatGPT this question, and it told me that 106.3 was mainstream Rock, but I know that's not true. I can't remember what format they put on 106.3 in the 90s when they transferred power 106.3 over to 107.5. One other question is when Radio One bought 107.5 I believe they waited a few months before transferring the format of power 106.3 over to 107.5, and I'm wondering what format they had on 107.5 before the transfer after Radio One bought them. My assumption is probably an urban AC but I don't remember.

My memory is fuzzy even though I grew up in the market. I believe 106.3 became "Joy 106.3" after the move of Power 106.3 to 107.5. I do not remember 106.3 being Mainstream Rock.

Before 107.5 became Power it was an Urban formatted station with the call letters of WJZA .

Yeah, it probably got confused with The Big Wazoo since both frequencies had Urban Gospel. One thing I remember is Power 106.3 pivoting to a hip hop heavy format when 107.5 first came on. Then, I believe Blue Chip bought 107.5 and Power 106.3 returned to a regular Urban Contemporary for a couple of months before being transferred over to 107.5. I actually remember the night of the transfer, because it happened during a Friday night or Saturday night mix show, and the DJ did a countdown to the frequency swap and 106.3 went to dead air. I honestly think they just made 107.5 much more adult oriented before transferring 106.3 over. It's just odd that I don't remember, but my guess is it was such a small window of time for 107.5 to have another format before the transfer that I probably don't remember.

Wasn't the Big Wazu on 103.1 at one time, following its oldies period? Or maybe I'm thinking of "Z Rock"...or something like that.

Please listen carefully:

This is a platform for humans to interact with other humans. It is run by humans who earn their livings by writing accurate material themselves, not with the use of AI/LLMs.

ChatGPT is not an accurate source for anything at all. It's junk content that doesn't reflect the kind of accurate history and current information that sites such as RadioInsight provide.

Content that's generated by ChatGPT or other AI/LLM systems is not allowed here, and users who persist in posting it will be banned without a second warning.

Are we completely clear?

Got it don't mention that you read something that was untrue on chatGPT, or mention its existence
No, no - of course you can mention ChatGPT. It exists, it's not going away, and AI is going to have a lot of effects on the broadcasting industry that we have to talk about.

It's just that the actual product ChatGPT produces when you ask it a question usually sucks, and we don't want this to become a board full of "oh, chatGPT told me this and it was probably wrong."

That's not very informative or useful.

103.1 was never "The Big WAZU" 103.1 aired a syndicated satellite format called "Z-Rock" for many years. I believe in the early 90's then it became "Joy 103.1" running Salem's "Today's Christain Music" format for a brief period before switching formats.

107.1 was the longtime home of WAZU "The Big WAZU" which was almost fully automated rock format that I believe was started by Jacor after they brought the frequency. (the original WAZU format was actually started in Cinci ironically also on 107.1 down there which morphed into CHR "Kiss FM" in that market. I want to say when Jacor bought WNCI/WCOL from Nationwide they had to divest stations and 95.5, 96.3 and 107.1 was sold to CBS Radio at that point and CBS radio kept the "WAZU" rock format through its ownership and when Wilks Broadcasting brought the stations from CBS/Infinity and flipped it to "Wink 107.1"

My bad, I misunderstood. I thought you were saying that entire posts that I've written were AI generated, or written by AI. So in my head I was thinking "Well, I can't prove or disprove whether it was me that wrote the post or not." But what you're saying makes sense. The first part about asking chatGPT the format wasn't really relevant to the post, and I'll leave stuff like that out.

I looked into the stations file and some old posts here on this site and came up with a history for 106.3.

CALL SIGN HISTORY
WCKX - 01/24/1992 (CDBS) Power 106.3, Miracle Power 106.3, and before that it was Country 106.3 in the early days if the signal
WMXG - 12/26/1997 (CDBS) MAJIC 106.3
WCZZ - 10/02/1998 (CDBS) Smooth Jazz
WJYD - 07/31/2000 (CDBS) Joy 106.3
WXMG - 09/23/2011 (CDBS) Majic ? Simulcast?
WBMO - 11/23/2015 (CDBS) Boom 106.3 (Classic Hip Hop)
WHTD - 02/01/2022 (CDBS) Power 106.3/1075
WJYD - 11/13/2024 (LMS) Joy 106.3

9/23/11 was when they sold 98.9 and moved the urban adult contemporary over to the terrible 106.3 signal.

Also Boom 106.3 ended the format sometime in 2017 but kept the wbmo call letters until 2022, when they changed the call letters to whtd. I'm not sure why they just randomly changed the call letters 5 years into the simulcast, but I do remember those call letters being on Urban One's Detroit hip Hop station, so maybe it changed formats and they wanted to hold on to the call letters idk

ChatGPT told me you'd say that. [Kidding!] I pretty much have found ChatGPT to be useless for anything.

The 106.3 station in the 1970s was a local Madison County type of station, using call letters than I believe had an L in them to reflect "London" as its city of license. Until a religious broadcaster from Seattle, newly renamed Crista Ministries, bought it and tried to replicate its "contemporary Christian music" format that it's run for decades on KCMS. They changed the call letters to WSYX (for "106") and hoped it would take Columbus by storm. Despite it's beyond-suburban signal limitations. Those call letters seems to have floated around the market on other radio and TV signals since then.
I left my first radio gig after college in Albuquerque to work for their start up in London, Ohio in 1979 or '80. After a cross country drive, I arrived to find a one-room studio/office, lacking walls, construction not quite begun, with an open toilet in the middle of the room. Should have been an omen for me to turn around and go back to New Mexico, since the job, and the station, didn't last long!

In Dec 1997 (shortly after Christmas) WJZA which was at 107.5 and was an Urban AC swapped frequencies with WCKX Power 106.3 which was Urban. The call letters and WCKX and urban format was moved to 107.5, while the Urban AC format was moved to 106.3 to which then or shortly after they were Magic 106.3 with WXMG calls. I remember this quite well as at the time I was living in Lancaster and a DJ who was listened to Hip-Hop music, you couldn't pick up Power 106.3 AT ALL down in Lancaster.
My first time in Ohio (visiting before i moved there) was Nov 1991 when WCKX was Urban Power 106.3, what it was before then, I do not know.

The small window of time when 107.5 first came on the air, was locally owned, and Blue Chip owned 106.3 was great for hip hop fans, as 106.3 pretty much immediately became an awesome hip hop station in response to 107.5's new Urban Contemporary format.

They really stepped up their Hip-Hop presentation after Horace Perkins debuted WJZA which had better signal coverage over the Columbus metro.
