Nielsen TV Ratings/Inauguration

Correct if I'm wrong. I'm aware everything is tracked everywhere. I have some folks telling me that they want to influence TV ratings for the inauguration by turning their TV to a different channel (HGTV, Food Network, etc.) so the inauguration doesn't get ratings credit. I've mentioned it doesn't really matter if the household isn't participating in a Nielsen survey. I'm of course, being told I'm wrong. So am I?

You’re not the only one. I’ve seen several messages on my social media feeds trying to discourage viewers from watching the inauguration, which happens to fall on the same day as MLK day and the College Football Championship. But now with Trump moving his swearing in to inside the Capitol with only Congressional and Senate members in attendance and all outside events cancelled due to severe weather conditions we can expect the ratings to become moderately soft than the first one Trump had during the first term.

I am absolutely planning not to watch, but I don't think I'm affecting the ratings.

Do the people meters capture any of the streaming services or YouTube clicks?

As with radio, TV PPMs will only detect signals that are encoded. The only signals that are encoded are the ones that seek Nielsen monitoring. So YouTube has no reason to encode. They have their own usage statistics. But if you're streaming MSNBC or NBC TV, it's encoded, so it will be measured.

If you don't have a meter, you're not being measured.

One way to avoid the actual inauguration is watch the highlights that are shown later. That viewing doesn't count towards the actual inauguration.

I'm recording it. I got on the computer (and would rather focus on one thing) after it happened in the middle of what I assume was his speech. I went to Wikipedia and as expected, there was some disagreement over when to declare him President. One person did it at 11:59, even though officially it's supposed to be Noon, and the edit that made it final came after the swearing in.

This is an interesting demographic point:

Of the audience above, 71% of viewers fell into the 55+ age bracket, while just 6% were aged 18-34.

And THIS was on a holiday, when a lot of people had the day off.

I'm sure we'll be hearing how his fans work in the sectors that didn't have the day off
That suggests acknowledging that a number was low (or lower than the previous). That’s really not the M.O. of the administration. They’ll simply lie and say it was watched more than ever in history (or some similar spin) if—and that’s a big if—it ever comes up. The few articles out there are a meaningless blip in the massive amount of noise being generated by far more consequential things. I’d be shocked if any reporter ever bothers mentioning this again.

No, it's the same as radio. The audio is encoded and it will be captured if it's an old antenna TV just like a radio station will be captured on an old transistor unit.
