San Diego Wildfires thread

San Diego News outlets this week have been reporting on wildfires via Cal Fire alerts within their county from Poway and Mission Valley. This is in response to watch out for the Santa Ana Winds and also fears of similar fallout that Los Angeles County has faced in the past two weeks.

A buddy of mine lives in the vicinity. Until his daughter from out of state sent him a text, he was unaware of how close he was to that fire.

Your buddy is very lucky to have a daughter who keeps up on his surroundings for him. One would think that common sense would tell a person that lived in an area that is having a "Biblical" drought to pay attention either by traditional media or social media.

We have confirmation that national news outlets are covering the San Diego Country area fires.

And now we have another fire in Rancho Bernardo.

OK we have San Diego News outlets going into the Rancho Bernardo neighborhood covering the evacuation orders and rescue operations from San Diego City fire. The Fear is that San Diego will have to deal with similar stuff that Pacific Palisades, Sylmar and Altadena faced when they had their fire storms.

Here are updates for the San Diego area fires.

A bit of a reality check...

The Mission Valley fire was yesterday, burned for a few hours, and was put out after burning 4 acres. I live a few miles from there and wasn't worried at all. Rancho Bernardo is contained at 7 acres. This is not an LA scenario. And a very light breeze at the moment.

Oh, and Fox 5 is airing Judge Judy. No major news coverage at all.

Yes saw the updates so far and the incident was confined to San Diego Fire Department to respond to those brush fires and yes this one was contained to 7 acres and evacuation orders are lifted.

An Evacuation order has been issued for LA Jolla due to reports of a brush fire in the neighborhood. But then again San Diego fire crews fear that the brush fires in their area can end up the same way Los Angeles county is facing now with the Castaic fire.

A brush fire began burning Thursday afternoon in La Jolla and quickly prompted evacuations.

The fire sparked just after 2 p.m. near Gilman Drive and Via Alicante, not far from where it intersects with Interstate 5, an area close to UC San Diego and the Torrey Pines golf course, where the PGA is hosting the Farmers Insurance Open this week.

So far, according to Cal Fire, 1 acre has been burned so far by this fire.

There is a new wildfire reported in the San Diego area and it’s the “Border 2 Fire” according to CalFire it’s the largest so far for San Diego County and it’s 4000 acres. Multiple news outlets in the San Diego area has been covering this for some time given the fears that their area are at risk in the same way Los Angeles County has faced in the past 2 weeks.

Here is an air check from KGTV and their fire coverage.

Apparently a golf tournament that was supposed to be in Los Angeles area is tentatively supposed to be in the San Diego area but that’s now uncertain now that a 4000 acre fire is raging in the area.

The PGA Tour is relocating the Genesis Invitational out of wildfire-ravaged Los Angeles, announcing Friday it will be held Feb. 13-16 on the South course at Torrey Pines in San Diego with an emphasis on relief initiatives for victims of the fires.

That gives Torrey Pines two tournaments in a span of four weeks.

The tour said the $20 million signature event hosted by Tiger Woods would return to Riviera Country Club next year.

Riviera was not damaged, but it is located in the Pacific Palisades community that has been devasted by fires that have killed 28 people and destroyed more than 14,000 structures in Greater Los Angeles since Jan. 7.

BBC News and USA Today are now also covering the San Diego area wildfires for the rest of the nation.

Update the Border 2 fire in San Diego County is now at 5000 acres. It’s one of the largest in San Diego county as of this posting. On the radio side KPBS have updates on their site over this fire.

Here is Ihearts updates on the Border 2 fire via the KOGO Radio website.

It turns out some of the CalFire Crews that were originally assigned to fight the Los Angeles area fires are reassigned to San Diego for this fire.
