CNN to lay off hundreds

Regardless of how you feel about the network itself, this will happen to nearly all cable networks in time.

Which is why CNN is redirecting costs for linear cable channels to on-demand subscription digital content:

The layoffs come as CNN is rearranging its linear TV lineup and building out digital subscription products.

Everyone knows this is happening. That's why Comcast is spinning off its cable channels.

The other change taking place at CNN is that it's website has changed from free to subscription-based, similar to NYTimes.com.

I got this message after reading several articles on the site:

Jim Acosta has announced he is leaving CNN:

Unless he plans on moving over to MSNBC, almost no one will be watching him. News streaming on YouTube is a drop in the bucket compared to how many people watch cable news. But maybe he really is doing this for journalistic integrity. 🤷

It might be for now but cable news isn't attracting new viewers and too much in bed with their money driven oligarch owners who are the gatekeepers of what is deemed news. I also don't see a huge market subscribing to paying for streaming that content as viewers are hitting the exits of cable and dish because of high costs. People are starting to find a lot of free channels such as Meidas Touch on YouTube to inform them, but there are also channels that will send them down a rabbit hole like Fox or Newsmax.

When the fires first broke out in Southern California, I was watching the live coverage on YouTube, as that was the only way to get round-the-clock coverage. Even then, at the height of the fires, the streams were only getting 30-40,000 viewers at night. These were the local FOX and CBS feeds, as well as CNN International. I sincerely doubt Acosta will get anyway near those numbers.

Since I upgraded my main TV's capabilities (ironically, with an Amazon Firestick), I've been watching the major Los Angeles channels and their news coverage a fair amount. KCAL/KCBS, KNBC, KABC, KTLA and KTTV all did excellent work over the last month on covering the fires, even if certain anchors are sometimes too bubbly for the somber news being covered. (Talking at you, Fox11's Eye Candy brigade.) Others were excellent and reminded me of how 9-11 was covered in NYC.

FOX 11's helicopter squad certainly is funny. I don't know if it was the pilot or cameraman, but they made some funny, off-the-cuff comments during the later hours when they were no longer on television. 🤣

By "funny", do you mean they'd gotten punchy from all that they'd seen, or "gallows humor", or just insensitive snark? I can believe watching all that destruction could trigger a sharp in-the-moment ad-lib or two, but that does beg the question, do you work there? Or were you listening in to their 2-way?

BTW, it's a serious question. If they were no longer on the air, how did you hear it?. Maybe you recall an example?

They have a YouTube stream, maybe that’s what he watched
