KAND Corsicana goes silent

It's sad but not surprising. Also in the DFW orbit, I'm not sure how 250 watt daytimer KHBR 1560 in Hillsboro is still hanging on (no translator).

KBEC in Waxahachie seems to be on a little better footing.

Perhaps the sibling newspaper and radio station have been able to prop up each other? Just a guess; many of these types of operations are still going out of sheer habit. I think ownership has been the same for a long time.

The 99.1 translator for KBEC helps, much to the annoyance of KFZO.

The clock is ticking on it, too, unfortunately. KAND, as we know it, is through, but there's value still in it. Perhaps the Spearman Family, or perhaps someone actually in Navarro County, will pick the license up eventually. The Chili ain't gonna get ice cold, in other words.

Are the Spearmans in some financial disatress? Alot of their stations have been off the air/gone dark, simulcasting other stations, theyve sold some, etc

Can't speak for the facilities outside of ETX, but their properties in Palestine, Henderson, and Athens are seemingly doing quite well. Of course, KNET, KYYK, KCKL, KLVQ and KWRD were long established in each of their respective towns before the ZulaCom acquisitions, SRG. A lot of these clients have been running spots on them for years. The only one that I find with a rather small spot load currently is KNET, and that was expected when they dumped N/T for classic hits after the purchase. 1450 hadn't played music in many years prior to it, so that has been a bit of an adjustment for listeners and businesses around Anderson County. I hear good things about KNET constantly, so the change appears to be a positive one.

KYYK, as an example, had a pretty significant issue with the transmitter not long ago. Monte Spearman got it replaced and had 98.3 churning out the classic country again in just a couple of weeks, and that's including having to ship it out of state for repairs. I've, personally, been rather impressed with what they've done. Let's just say that TLC had the AM/FM in Palestine on autopilot for a long time.

I always hate to see small town radio stations cease operations. They are the lifeblood of the community with local sports broadcasts, tradio and news and information very specific to that town.

It is sad but many small town stations had more recent (last couple of decades) ownership changes that left many such stations a shell of what they had been. This was because the audience might listen for local news or tradio or high school sports and little else. In my small town a client that spent $1,200 a month in the 1980s now spends $300...with inflation that's about 8 or 9% of what they once spent. Blame it on big box stores and restaurants as well as Amazon. The moms and pops that were so supportive are simply a shell of what they once were. In my town, they go to Walmart and Home Depot, not the locally owner grocer or building supply.

anyone have the contact info for the owner? I have someone interested in buying this station.
I've been the Engineer for KAND for the past 15 years and have contact information for the owner. I'll be happy to share it with anyone who would like to talk to them. Call me at (979) 820-3468.

There is a Silent STA through 31 October 2025. The facility is intact and ready to resume operation until 31 December 2024, after that the studios and all of the equipment will be gone. If anyone is seriously interested in buying the station they need to talk to the owner by 15 December 2024.

Looks like the owner has a couple of AMs around Houston...I wonder what they want to do with KAND as a small town station. It doesn't seem like it would be very upgradable to hit D/FW.
