KHHT Hot 92.3 remembered

Hey there, I just wanted to talk about former LA Rhythmic AC station Hot 92.3. Until 2011, Hot 92.3 used to play a variety of Old School & Current R&B. I enjoyed the station in 2002-03 when they would play New R&B, Old School and some adult friendly hip hop. I looked at playlists over the years and the station has been through so many phases during its time on the air. In 2004-05, Mike Marino was named PD and bought back the mega oldies with a few R&B currents. Anyway I miss the station until this very day.

I remember in 2011, I was upset about Hot being strictly old school because they weren’t playing enough 90’s and Current R&B. I also recall seeing billboards for Hot all over LA during the early 2000’s. During 2002-03, they were really focusing on the new R&B plus some hip hop titles by LL Cool J, etc. According to R&R and Billboard Airplay Monitor billed it as an Urban AC but played more crossover R&B instead of just songs that charted at Urban AC. Around 2008, the station moved towards a Rhythmic AC format to skew more Hispanic Listeners. I was 7 going on 8 when Hot came on the air in August 2001.
 
I would imagine that the Hot of the late 2000s had survived, it would sound like 94.7 The Wave today - but perhaps without The Wave's random non-rhythmic tracks, like "Broken Wing" by Mister Mister).

Yes, those hold-over vocals from the Smooth Jazz days are still there. How many Rhythmic AC stations play Sting, Phil Collins and Norah Jones?

One fact about KHHT Hot 92.3: Its original program director was Liz Kiley, the only female DJ heard on WABC 770 New York while it was a Top 40 station. She did Saturday and Sunday evenings as well as fill-ins. But she only stayed for half a year.

Yeah I agree with you on that. 94.7 The Wave does somewhat sound like Hot 92.3 in the 2000’s despite the fact that are more pop leaning and still play the vocals from their smooth jazz days such as Sting, Phil Collins.

I look at old playlists for the station. In 2002, they played Mario “Just a Friend 2002”, Ashanti “Foolish”, Faith Evans “I Love You”, P Diddy Feat. Usher & Loon “I Need a Girl Pt. 1”. I enjoyed the station a lot during that time. Hot wasn’t a typical Urban AC because they targeted Latino listeners along with black, white and asian listeners who enjoyed R&B music.
 
Still weird LA doesn't have an "Old School" station again. I usually stream 104.7 out of IE. I think it could be tried again. Magic 92.5 does well in SD and the old school stations have frequencies also in Ventura, Santa Barbara, Antelope Valley, etc. You never really know how well it will do until it's tried, people will have their theories if it will work or not.

I listen to that station via streaming and 104.7 has an interesting music mix. I hear stuff that I haven’t heard in ages.

94.7 The Wave would be the closest we have to a "Rhythmic Oldies" station. My second favorite LA station after 93.5 KDAY.

That’s very true because I hear stuff from Temptations, Aretha Franklin, etc. When KRRL debuted, The Wave started to play more Rhythmic oldies along with Sting, Phil Collins which are holdovers from their smooth jazz era.
 
I’m currently thinking about Hot right now. It was great to know that it was there but after a few years the station started going through an identity crisis. It was Urban AC one minute then Rhythmic AC another minute. IMO it wasn’t a real Urban AC like KJLH because it played Rhythmic Crossover tunes in addition to the Urban AC songs.
